I definitely disagree about pictures not making a difference! When I voted, for instance, I think I had forgotten about FF XII for 2006 (which is a game I definitely care about). Had I not been invested in the contest I probably wouldn't have remembered KH2 either.

Not to say it necessarily would have made up a 10 point gap, but it hurt 2006 for sure.

Yes for sure, I meant to open that for discussion (was the board vote because we're "smarter" and realize 2006 is deeper, or were we moreso just protecting our brackets?) but we already spent 20 minutes hashing out other aspects of that match so I just moved on instead.

Even though the strongest year in the contest would be projected to score almost 100% (like 99.98% or 99.99%) on 1973, it doesn't consider how voters would actually vote in a hypothetical 1998/1973 match. The lowest percentage ever recorded in a GameFAQs poll was 0.06% and that was a multi-way poll (it might have had around 10 options, not entirely sure). To get 0.06% in a 1v1 poll is even less likely.

I've thought about this idea as a possible bonus match. The only issue is making a match picture for 1973, since we're very hard pressed just to find 4 games (or systems) for the match picture. This is assuming we run 2 bonus matches at the same time, meaning we'll be using the Round 1 match picture format for both of them.
