the only way this works out is if 1. somebody buys IO in tact, and I don't know how realistic that is considering IO were just about to or already staffed up and 2. they somehow keep Hitman, which again, I don't know if that's realistic. IO are only valuable as a team in the middle of following up on Hitman Season 1, so maybe they can only be sold as a package deal

Some fascinating numbers from a NeoGAF mod, to put into perspective why Square might think this is a wise idea:

Hitman Absolution: Owners: 3,020,229 ± 50,168
Hitman: Owners: 631,227 ± 23,003

Hitman Absolution also shipped 3.6 million in a few months whereas presumably Hitman is no where near that.

Hitman Absolution was kind of a crazy success. It wasn't quite the hit on PC, where a lot of those sales came in the form of super cheap, ubiquitous bundles. It's also worth noting that the Hitman numbers only count owners of the intro bundle, because it was an episodic game.

Honestly, Mass Effect took five years to make another entry after 3, so we're no strangers to hiatuses with that franchise. Heh. Now, this latest news could mean twice that, or even permanent death... but I'm gonna live in denial on the latter for a while since it helps me breathe.

All that's known is a game called 'The Avengers Project'. I doubt it's based on Avengers 3 next year but I would guess they're going to release it around then for maximum dollars.

well fuck

i hope those folks get picked up and stay employed. they created an amazing game with a model that actually made sense in keeping the hitman name relevant throughout all of 2016, but apparently it didn't in the one way where it matters most. i wonder if other publishers/devs won't bother now with a season roll-out system for games like this.

i should try out that elusive target later.

Quick look at the gaf thread on this.

A lot of people seem vocal in their dislike of recent tomb raider games and lament deus ex no longer being a priority.

Gaf being contrarian? Or are b8ers the weird ones, I thought a lot of people here enjoyed the new tomb raider series and thought mankind divided was ok, but nothing special.

The way Hitman was released was a terrible decision, regardless of how good the game was.

Hell, I wanted the game and even I didn't get it because of how it was released. It went from a must-get game to a "whatever I'll wait a year until the full thing is released" game, and by then my interests had moved to other games

You know, I am really interested in Hitman (2016) but..I dunno

I loved Silent Assassin's, it's my most favorite Hitman game. The series is kinda of a miss-hit series
First game is trash, second is amazing, third is just a remake of the first with 3 unique missions so it's trash too, Bloody Money is awesome, and then Absolution..god, why did this thing sell so well?
Absolution didn't feel like a Hitman game, it wasn't about disguise and tricks and it was more about stealth and it sucked

Hitman 2016 sounds promising but I am afraid of the only 6 missions thing.
Isn't it too short? yes the levels are big, and yes you can have 3000 ways to finish a mission, but do I really want to play the same level again and again?
I mean I remember when Scribblenauts came out and they said there are millions of way to solve a level I was hyped "yeah I will get the starite down from the tree by using a axe! by using a helicopter! by using a fire! by using a...yeah let's skip to the next level.."

Is it only six levels? I assumed each episode had, like, two or three missions.

Come to think of it, one of the major complaints is that the 2016 game requires a constant internet connection- if Squeenix are offloading the franchise, is there a danger they'll scrap the servers at some point and render the game unplayable?

There are only six levels and the two tutorial missions, though there are four extra episodes, which are remixes of four of the levels (including a Home Alone themed mission). Each level has several opportunities that can be followed that let you do some fun things, like one of the Paris opportunities requires you to dress up as a model, get make-up and run the catwalk before going to meet one of the targets. Also some missions have objectives besides assassination. You'll learn different things and hear different conversations this way too.

There's also numerous challenges for each level (mostly kills in certain ways or with certain items or while wearing certain costumes) as well as online challenges and user-made stuff, but I never bothered with any of that. Basically, there's a lot you can do with it if you want to, but if you're only interested in playing each level once and then moving onto the next, might be worth giving this a miss, unless it ends up super cheap down the line.

And the game is still playable offline, but you won't get any unlocks. I imagine that when they discontinue updates for the game and stop doing elusive targets, they'll patch in a full offline mode.

Actually if those are considered challenges like they were in Absolution then yeah I would do them

I believe so. There's normally the ones for just doing the mission objectives, then ones for getting all disguises, completing it without being detected, only wearing your suit, only wearing your suit and not being detected and only killing the targets and one for only using your garrote wire. Then there are level specific ones that are often linked in with the opportunities or level-specific environment hazards or starting points. Then there's normally a few silly, but difficult ones, like the Paris level has a whole set revolving around a magician costume that you can find in the attic.

I normally just did all the opportunities, any fun sounding challenges and then the suit/undetected ones and that was normally more than enough to achieve level mastery and unlock everything.
