Students at Bethune-Cookman University turned their BACKS on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and BOOED her as she read her boring commencement speech Wednesday at the historically black college in Florida!!

She praised foudner Mary McLeod as someone who "refused to accept systemic and repulsive racism" and had the "courage to change old ideas" as she asked the graduates to hear one another out as waves of boos continue to drown her out.

Students kept trying to shout her down as University President Edison Jackson asked for calm and said "If this behaviour continues, your degrees will be mailed to you. Choose which way you want to go"

Betsy DeVos is a controversial pick for Education Secretary as she has no classroom experience and offended many African-Americans when she said black colleges were "real pioneers when it comes to school choice"

She acknowledged that the colleges were "born, not out of mere choice but out of necessity, in face of racism"

She continued to cite black colleges as alternative options for quality education as her goal is to promote diversion of tax money to private and charter schools

Students found her invitation to be misguided as they gathered petitions demanding her not to be the key note speaker and activists held signs that said "DeVos is not worthy"

Betsy DeVos has never been in the public school system and has gone to private charter schools in her upbringing and grew up in a faith based school system.

It means she doesn't understand that such schools exist because of reasons that go beyond "Oh, I want to go to that place 10+ miles away instead of the dump a block from home," or because of ongoing ethnic and racial issues I'd rather not get into here. It means she's spouting words to sound more intelligent or respectable than she actually is.
