Depends on the disease.
Yellow fever, malaria, AIDS, etc are all still deadly in developing nations last time I checked.

I was thinking along the lines of them saying Ebola was going to be the next major pandemic

Maybe in Africa where medical care is extremely poor in most countries there.

This. From what I've seen over the last couple 'epidemics/pandemics' the WHO generally stay pretty focused on where the issue is.

The media is the one freaking the fuck out saying we're all gonna die from Zika/Ebola/GonosyphillAIDS.

no... are you kidding? I mean, considering how bad it could theoretically get, being overly cautious is exactly what we should be. we *want* to err on the side of too much caution, not too little...

just read a random unrelated quote the other day that fits the topic. something like "if you need garbage trucks to move your dead, something's not right".

Possibly, but overplaying them is far, far better than underplaying them. The people who say "man they were so scared about *insert potential pandemic here* but it turned out to be nothing, so we shouldn't take these public health agencies seriously" are idiots, given that it's the serious public health response to them that prevented them from becoming major problems.

Fuck no, absolutely not. There's a reason infections used to be a terrifyingly common and painful cause of death. Because of medical advancements by some of the most intelligent people in history, we have almost entirely removed that from the equation.
