Asian is technically correct, white is visually correct, so black stands out like someone cosplaying a shinra soldier with a startrooper helmet.

Bloody hell it's just cosplaying. Some folks lack the physique for the cosplay to be "correct" while some do a poor job with their costume and yet their skin colour seem to be the glaring issue?

because it's odd seing such a different contrast when a person of color cosplays them.

You don't see me trying to pull off a white samuel l jackson, because i know it can't be done right.

But i still give them props because slim picking of who you want to be.

I probably can't be Samuel L Jackson in Die Hard 3, but i still got everyone else in the movie i can try to cosplay as.

Cosplaying should generally be more about the costume than the individual so I don't care.

A good looking white chick taping cardboard to her tits shouldn't really be the peak of cosplay.

I don't know about you but I shake my head at poor impersonations and crappy outfits as they've done a shitty job like slutty cats on Halloween. When I see someone cosplaying the wrong race it's puzzling and distracting, but I still appreciate effort made (if any is applicable). People who have the wrong physique bother me most as they can change their musculature or who they cosplay as but they chose someone they don't match up with, it's tacky at best.

Overlooking your hilarious typo, most manga/anime/game characters are drawn with white features -- such as far larger breasts than you'd find among Asians and with paler than average skin -- so it fits either way.

The real question you should be asking is why blacks don't get mad over a black Jefferson but they get mad about a white MLK.

He literally just explained why that is. Pay attention. More importantly, losing their minds is a white MLK, not a black Tifa.

Because it hasn't really been done, since every time somebody tries to cast a white MLK it goes shot down.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/11/11/a-white-actor-was-cast-as-mlk-until-the-black-playwright-caught-wind-of-it/

As actors of color increasingly play traditionally white roles, breaking Broadway’s color barriers, should the opposite be true as well? Should a white man be allowed to play a black historical figure as important as Martin Luther King?

Not in my play, Hall answered.

Which humorously defies MLK's wishes, intent, etc

“I truly wanted to explore the issue of racial ownership and authenticity,” director Michael Oatman said on opening night of his decision to use two actors — one white, one black — to play King. “I didn’t want this to be a stunt, but a true exploration of King’s wish that we all be judged by the content of our character and not the color of our skin. … I wanted the contrast. … I wanted to see how the words rang differently or indeed the same, coming from two different actors, with two different racial backgrounds.”

I get your sentiment, but in this particular case, MLK's race is directly correlated to his relevance as an historical figure. Casting him as anything else would be "incorrect", for lack of a better word. It's not that I'd consider it racist, just that it undermines the character. Most of his struggles and motivations were a result of his status as a black man.

what if said "white" actor was really an albino or light skinned dude with black parents? He's 100% "black" on the inside but "white" on the outside. would it be okay then?

I've never seen anyone care more that a black person was cosplaying than any other race.

Asians do it the most because of Japan, every other race I see it about evenly.

Me neither although I don't go read comments. I think it is cool that characters have fans of all races, sex and ages that want to dress as them.
