this is the topic where for the 50th time in 3 days i'm exporting a table of like 1000 rows except for some reason this one has frozen for like 15 minutes

I wouldn't know. I don't get into the office for another hour.

I'm expecting it to be pretty average though. A few things to do, but no exceptional rush to get them done.

benefit of my current job: nobody has any clue how long stuff is meant to take me. "hey can you do this thing for me?" "sorry the database i'm working on is going to take me at least a month" *opens gamefaqs tab 30 times in next 5 minutes while access processes shit*

I'm guessing you're using it because it's 'free' (At least, as part of Office)?

Well, better than Excel I guess.

i mean, because i literally don't know what i'm doing. once i've actually made all the database, i plan to start trying to figure out building queries and such in SQL. and yes, we have access installed already and i no longer have local admin rights on my own machine so using anything else would require actually explaining to the director what i'm doing and try to get him to understand why any other tools may be helpful.

but mostly because i have no idea what i'm doing. it's WORKING so far though!

Given that, it's actually pretty acceptable, and it does rank higher than Excel on the right-tool-for-the-job list.

Its biggest problem is that it's designed for single-user access, scales horrifically to multiple users, and (Unless this has been fixed in the past few years) has a nasty habit of occasionally corrupting data when multiple people use it simultaneously.

But you literally just said you don't care about that issue because you're the only one using it while you learn and it gets built. So it's whatever.

i'm starting to use queries on my database, exporting the results to excel and giving those to the end users for now which is how i'm hacking together multiple user access. when this eventually works if i could get the end users to all use it i'd only have to actually do stuff like, one day a week.

fun bonus: i get to use access 07 with a 2GB limit where the main database file i'm referring to is published by the government as a .csv bigger than that so i get to use linked tables for extra compatability issues. i have been asking for access 2010 for like a month now.
