I had to write this dude up today because he shipped the wrong item.

Comple accident, could happen to anyone. The volume of orders these guys pull is impressive. One small mistake that ended up costing the company $18 in shipping on an order that they profited $800.

When I found out he did it I just told him about it and suggested he slowed down a bit so it didn't happen again.

Brass finds out about it and commands me to write him up over it. 30+ minute conversation with the general manager about how it was just a mistake and I didn't feel it was deserving of a write up.

Shut the fuck up and do what I say was basically his response.

The guy was visibly annoyed with it, but he took it like a champ.

Feels bad man

I've written people up for being late and for playing on their phones.

This situation wasn't intentional and didn't deserve punishment. Obviously if he did it again it would be an issue, but the first time should have been a verbal warning.

Yes. I fell for those that have to. Many times it's not much more pay. Added headaches, and having to tell people they need to do better.

either your boss sucks or he's being pressured to get rid of people so every little thing wrong/against the book is fair game for write up

Did you tell the guy you wrote up that it totally wasn't your call?

What would happen if you lied and said you wrote the guy up but actually didn't? Would your boss ever find out?

The general manager is very strict apparently. He hates the shipping department (I'm the 3rd shift manager of) we get blamed for everything. This is only my 7th week working here, up until today I've really enjoyed it.

Yes. I had a conversation with him when I first found out about the mistake, and then I had to sit down with him and a witness and do the official "this is what you did wrong, these are the consequences, sign this please".

Yes. There is the initial paperwork of the write up that I, the witness, and the employee have to sign, that gets sent off to corporate and filed. If I didn't do it they would know.

Sorry, had to google it. It must be an American term. Never heard it used before here.

Where are you from?
It is pretty common here in Canada also.

Anyways I think it should be 1st time (depending on what) should be a warning
After that should be write ups, depending on how long between the situations.

Normally in most American companies you get a verbal warning, a written warning, and then suspension/fired. In some states like Georgia you can skip all that and just fire someone without an explanation.
