both countries have all the resources and population to become economic world powers, but Russia has an economy smaller than Italy and South Korea whit a much larger population and Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world was one of the richest nations of south America and now the are taking lines to buy toilet paper.

Russia already IS an economic world power and the biggest thing holding it back is sanctions. And saying that Venezuela can become a world power because it has oil is like arguing that Brunai can become a world power. More importantly, nothing there has anything to do with nationalist populism. In Venezuela's case, it's socialist policies and widespread corruption.

And, while people like to blame communism for Russia's woes, the country is actually doing better today than almost any time in history. Before the revolution, people were starving under the czars. After the revolution, somewhat fewer people were starving under the communist government.

"Intergrate" how? Can they no longer wear their headware? Do they have to pay taxes? Do they need to sit down and drink Budwiser while at a street BBQ? Do they have to eat meat? Do they have to follow the laws? Do they have to not beat their wives? Marry off their kids?

Why does everyone talk about socialism/capitalism as if they're polarized, mutually exclusive terms? Hell the US has dozens of socialists programs and likewise the backbone of the socialist European countries people like to talk about is capitalism. Discussion would be so much more measured, intelligent and productive if we thought about these things as a spectrum instead of polar concepts.

Besides corruption and bad management, which plenty of countries have, isn't the drop in oil prices also what's hurting them? Was oil their main and only export? Did they have any other major ones?

Unlike other oil rich countries like the Middle East it didn't seem Venezuela put in enough effort to find an alternative export. They didn't seem to "future proof" their market well enough.

Nationalist doesn't automatically equate to racism. However, all ages of the Japanese population are heavily inclined towards racism. Japan is among the world's most openly xenophobic nations, which is one reason why it's almost impossible to get citizenship there.

Socialism/capitalism aren't exactly on a spectrum. The assumption that the absence of a socialist policy automatically equates to capitalism is silly. In reality, it just means less government control. More importantly, socialism has multiple meanings and a lot of things which people associate with socialism were never unique to socialism at all. You have guys like Erik P trying to argue that roads and an army are socialist, when those details are shared by most nations including monarchies and dictatorships.

This is the problem when arguing socialism vs capitalism. No one defines the terms, everyone is looking for gotcha examples and things really fit neatly into a single box. Labels in politics seem like they do more damage than good. Everyone always makes them a binary choice then tribalism takes over.
