Board 8 > Wow I wish someone had warned me how bad Super Mystery Dungeon is (not a route)

-9 hour tutorial (not hyperboyle)
-No more catching pokemon in dungeons, now there's a new nonsensical branching quest thing.
-Main character can't be switched out post game
-Worst writing of any game ever
-At certain points in the game, you're forced into mandatory dungeons, with no opportunity to adjust your team, go back to any other dungeons, or buy items. These dungeons are filled with pokemon that can one shot you before they even appear on your screen or radar.

It's such a shame because pokemon mystery dungeon is such a great formula if it's done right. Can no game out there satisfy my craving for a pokemon rougelike?

I played Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Darkness and both were cool. No experience with anything newer.

I liked Super Mystery Dungeon. Its the prior mystery dungeon that was really awful

Oh no not yet, I'm up to having to find Budew. Not sure how far along that is.

I'm enjoying it for what it is for far even if it is very repetitive. The writing's been cute, a bit irritating at times (fuck Pancham) but other than that I'm alright with it. Squirtle as the companion is the best.

To make it clear, my complaint isn't that the dungeons are hard, some are, but they should be.

There's just on in particular that is head and heels more difficult than the others (after you beat it, the game because a breeze) And it's not the hardness thats bad, its the lack of tools the game gives you besides repeatedly suicide bombing it

does explorers have the RNG encounter recruitment for pokemon? Because that's the number one thing I'm missing in super post game.

Yes, Explorers (if you're picking one, Sky is the way to go) has the random recruitment. I haven't played Super but it seems insane to prefer the random method, mostly because success rates were so low for so many Pokémon. Having to go through 40+ floors just for a single digit percent chance to recruit the boss at the end is the worst shit. Don't even look at PMD: Gates to Infinity though, it's straight trash

But the real answer here is that you should play the non-Pokémon games, Shiren and even Torneko for PS1 are so much better

I originally thought I preferred random recruitment, but I realized I don't. It's infuriating to go through a dungeon a zillion times and not get what you want because of low ass success rates.

Super is pretty great.

I just want Friend Areas to come back. Make it optional, though. Don't force players to go them to add Pokemon, but still have the areas so we can through them and see all the Pokemon we've recruited just hanging out.

The rng recruitment has its flaws to be sure, but it has a lot of ups to it that i miss. Like going into a hard dungeon by yourself and picking up hoards of grimer/tentacool body shields.

Gameplay wise, Super is LEAGUES better than the rest of the PMDs and it's not even close. Story/plot wise I'll take arguments for yeah but in terms of gameplay, it was just so much more fun to play than the others in many ways, recruitment of pokemon being one of the biggest.

I was just annoyed because I didn't know how to get him (Ziggy) on my chart since none of the websites online or anything had posted any real info on how to do it. Eventually I figured out how to get him.

Also I don't remember saying anything close to wanting to drop the game. Maybe sarcastically or something, but I enjoyed the game through and through for the most part.

I'm very much not defending low encounter and capture rates. It was flawed, but with the ability to stack emera's in this game they had the perfect opportunity to fix it.

Instead we have a system that literally on your third mission gives you a level 50 salamence. There's no sense in progression if they automatically give you the most powerful pokemon to take with you before you're even out of the tutorial. By comparison, I just beat the epilogue and I still have no idea where to get pokemon like duskull or zigzagoon, and why would I use them anyway when I literally have level 50 salamence and also a good chunk of legendary pokemon.

You might like Etrian Mystery Dungeon. From the sounds of it it's more like the earlier Pokemon Mystery Dungeons than Super is. Aside from the playable cast being humans instead of pokemon, anyway. You can even recruit party members in dungeons.

Who wants to use a Salamence anyway.

No, that's better because then you can't bring OP OP dragon on every mission. You can only use him sparingly, which makes getting super OP pokes early on way less gamebreaking.
