Yes, 2001, 2008, 1997 and 2007 are all definitely more recent than 2014, 2009, 1999, and 2012

There really is no general consensus so far. The regulars on this board (the people who probably have followed these contests closer than anyone else) expect the following:

- 1998 is almost guaranteed to win the contest (it has Ocarina, Pokemon RBY, and other strong games)
- the 1990s in general will be strong due to a ton of great SNES/PS1/N64 games
- the early 2000s will also be strong (though not as strong as the 90s) due to popular PS2 and GameCube games
- the other eras (70s, 80s, later 2000s and 2010s) won't be as strong

So far, we've generally seen those predictions hold true, though we'll see if we are in for surprises later on.
