So I was listening to a song by the band Cap'n Jazz, highly influential emo band from the midwest. Somebody replied:

"Sorry I don't give a fuck what the hipsters say... this is shitty ska-esque music... NOT emo! I don't care how many bands they influenced. Maybe their other songs are different, but it's all out of key out of tune garbage to me... even grunge sounds better than this crap lol!"

Yowza! I get their music isnt for everyone, but this guy is so mad, and also so wrong. This band incorporated horns but no other ska elements, it seems like. Not the traditional ska guitar, nothing. His opinion of this being terrible isnt wrong but factually he is 100%

I feel like 'highly influential' and 'emo bands from the Midwest' are conflicting concepts.

At least two bands have taken names from song titles of theirs, we are scientists and scary kids scaring kids.

I wouldnt necessarily consider myself a music snob, though I admit I can come off like one. I spend a lot of my time listening to "underground" and "obscure" music, but hey I also like shit like taylor swift from time to time, so eh.

As far an genres are concerned, since this gets brought up every so often, I dont consider myself genre crazy, as In I dont have subdivisions of a subdivisions so fine only one or two bands could fit in them, but I recognize there are more genres than rock, pop, rnb, rap, etc. There are probably plenty of genre subcategories of rap but I couldnt even begin to list more than a few. But I wouldnt say I get too nitpicky. I dont correct people on shit if they say something incorrect, it doesnt really bother me. If you want to call the OP band alternative rock, thats fine.

But I was laughing at the quote in the OP because I guess way down the comments was a genre flame war, which is comical because go to allmusic or even wikipedia, and bam you know its genre. I did find it funny though, not his opinions of "shitty" and "out of tune garbage" which are not wrong, as you can say that. But I did laugh at how loudly he yelled and how wrong he was that this was ska. So while I couldnt care less to say anything to him(but I did post here because it amused me) myself, I had to chuckle at how he was wrong. This song has horns, thats it. No other ska elements, third wave, two-tone, nothing.
