Been here on and off since like 06/07 and yeah. It's been weird growing up with the board.

When I first got here, having contact with a woman at all made you a hero of the people. Doing drugs/drinking was seen as shameful since everyone was so damn sheltered.

Now there's dudes here who are married or have been divorced, smoke weed and other things regularly, and we have some genuine alcoholics.

Makes me feel old as shit even though I'm really not. One day I'll leave and be a better man for it I'm sure. -_-

Wonder what caused the decline. Social media and Reddit, I'm assuming. Too many other distractions than for people to care about video game message boards.

I was part of that group in hs 10 years ago. This site was surprisingly not blocked in my comp sci classes. 2-3 years after hs I missed it. Now I couldn't care less about it. My life is way better despite having actual responsibilities now

Really, there's no nothing wrong with life, but the magic simplicity of getting along in this world is heavily beaten out of you by by the time you become an adult. You have more responsibilities, stress can pile up, we're more likely to conform, settle into a routine, and compare ourselves and our successes/circumstances with our peers and other people. How we planned or envisioned our lives in the future rarely becomes a reality. Society and the rat race of capitalism has a way of beating people down.

CE was far more of a community back then rather than just a bunch of people who hate each other.

There was a lot more activity back in the day but I feel the people now are more mature as long as you ignore certain topics.

Go look at the poll of the days throughout the years that ask how old you are. You see roughly the same group of people growing up on GameFAQs together because the average age keeps getting older as the years go by. That's one thing GameFAQs failed at is getting new users after a certain point. Don't care what the admins say about traffic or whatever, as old users got older many quit, and didn't get many new users to replace them. The evidence is plain and clear. Low post rates on previously high traffic boards, lower average members online compared to past years, the aforementioned poll trends.

One positive is that it's kind of a close-knit community. A lot of recognizing other users that have been here just as long as you. But funny thing is that tensions that arise on these boards drive others away after a point. It's not the sole reason, some users just grow up and have different priorities than being online all the time so they eventually just stop coming here, but there's a lot of cyber bullying and ganging up on users that goes on here that's kind of mortifying to watch sometimes. So at this point I'm just sitting here watching this site whittle itself down by itself. Kind of sad but I mostly just lurk for short periods of time and post occasionally and am generally just offline way more.

The reason you probably like the HS days of GameFAQs more is because there was way more activity so there wasn't such a degree of familiarity among the users that there is now so not as many people took it so seriously.

It's just proof that the user base here has grown and arguably matured, and we haven't had a serious infusion of new people to the social boards. Back when I started, it was all about high school, video games, and music.
