As far as Native American affairs, it differs between each tribal organization. Some will consider having at least one Native ancestor as enough for status. Some other tribes, such as mine, say any less than 1/8 and you will not be recognized.

I haven't bothered to read through the news about her, but Elizabeth Warren potentially being 1/32 Native may or may not be considered substantial enough with the tribe she claims association with. And it's really up to them to decide that, being a tribal affair. If they say no, than it doesn't matter what she personally believes as far as official status.


I will, however, say that looking "white" is not a surefire indicator of invalid claims. Many biracial members of tribes who are identified as between 1/8 to even 1/2 look like a typical Caucasian. Some northern tribes in particular actually had lighter skin than the stereotypical dark (lighter, not pale). Which makes sense when considering history of regional climates and topography. Although Warren's blonde hair indicates whatever degree of ancestry she claims would have to be minuscule, since darker hair colors are fairly standard among tribal populations with closer ancestry.


The overall point is that would be up to the tribe Warren claimed to be a part of to determine if she was legit. While at the same time, "just looking at her" isn't really enough to say she couldn't have possibly been telling the truth. I would expect critics have already debunked her claims though.
