Even guys like Scalia were remarkably consistent in favor of free speech. Even more than many establishment liberals have been. What the President is redirecting the conservative conversation on speech to be is a radical departure from that, and it is a very sad thing to see (but not altogether surprising given the increasingly warped and nihilistic support of force as a cure to all that the right is increasingly embracing). For all the significant problems this country has, one of its greatest attributes is its freedom of speech protections which are more significant than any other country in the world.
