I have Bank of America, and their debit cards have chips now. The card is crappy, though. I've had two debit cards from them where the chip has worn down so much that chip readers can't read it.

Chip and PIN is so late to arrive to the US and we don't even use it right it's embarrassing.

It's fine in countries where the readers consistently work right and you actually use a PIN
I hate that half the time the readers here don't even use the chip even though they have the chip reader and then you wind up signing it anyway so it defeats the whole purpose of using the chip instead of just swiping it.

My Bank of America debit card has had a chip for years. They just issued me a new one, but I've been using my current one since at least 2013. My CSP credit card also has a chip.

I have this problem too. And a lot of machines require you to try to insert it into the chip reader 3 times before it accepts that it's broken and allows you to swipe. Takes a long ass time.

I had this happen with one of the readers at CVS a couple of weeks ago.

Swiping is a faster method anyways, though. Chip is way slower.

Yes they just started rolling them out maybe a couple of years ago, many places still don't have a chip reader and many of the places that DO have a chip reader don't work so you wind up sliding the card anyway.

Theoretically the chip and PIN is a more secure combination since 99% of the time they never even check your signature or ID in the US anyway. Even then, as long as the card is signed and the signature of the person making the purchase look similar enough the merchant's not going to question it.

EDIT: What a trainwreck of a paragraph I posted. What I mean is, when properly implemented even if it takes a little longer the Chip and PIN is better imo.

Just look at the infographic on how chip and pin is superior to the swipe and pin or swipe and sign. It's unbelievably better.

the speed of a chip transaction depends on three things:

- the network connection that the store's POS systems use for verifying credit card transactions
- the POS software
- the card reader itself

I've been in stores that will process my card in under 5 seconds, and others that take closer to 30. it's wildly inconsistent

I feel like we've had tap technology for a good decade or more but it never really caught on so you maybe see it at like fast food restaurants and WalMart/Target and that's about it.
