The first sequel will now be released on Dec. 18, 2020, followed by Dec. 17, 2021 and then three years later on Dec. 20, 2024 and then Dec. 19, 2025.

The first sequel was initially expected in December 2014, but it was bumped — again (to 2016) and then again. Then Cameron said last month that they wouldn’t meet the 2018 date. So three postponements later, we now have the official release dates (for now?). The last three films in the series were scheduled for 2020, 2022 and 2023 releases, so everything has been pushed back.

It sucks to see him waste all his time and talent on this shit. Who the fuck even asked for FOUR sequels? wtf

Dude is incredibly talented and could've been directing so many other movies instead of making all this Avatar crap.

Because this December 2017 is episode 8, then 2018 is a side story movie and finally 2019 is episode 9.

It really isn't, honestly, he loves underwater adventures and goes for movies that lets him approach that.

I couldn't get through the first Avatar movie. It bored the living shit out of me.

This is never going to happen. He will release the first one and a disappointing number will see it. Then the second sequel will be a flop and the rest won't happen.

I never saw the film, don't really care to see the film, but I do kinda hope it takes off. Right now, Hollywood only wants sequels and remakes. Avatar is something new. (Yeah, its plot is lifted from a 1950s novel. Did you read it?) Instead of giving us a live action adaptation of an animated series, the next superhero, or another reboot, this is an opportunity to build upon something that is new to the world. Plus, the international market seemed to like it.

Hollywood still seems to be kind of a rigged game when it comes to new properties. It is still an established producer / director coming up with his latest project. But at least it is something that just came out within the past five years. I can't think of anything else which has the potential to be a big movie series without its basis in an already established franchise.

I'm looking forward to them all. Not every film has to be a cinematic masterpiece. Sometimes a bland/unoriginal movie can be saved by amazing visuals and cinematography.

11 years is WAY too long for a sequel to a movie like Avatar. Unless there's some sort of interesting and new theater technology being developed for it, I don't think it's going to come close to bringing in numbers similar to the first.

The first one only happened to look pretty, but was otherwise forgettable. Why would I want to sit through 4 more of these "technology is BAD but we used high tech film equipment to make it happen" movies?
