Yes No View Results Alabama Senate has now approved NITROGEN GAS as a way to EXECUTE their inmates..even though it has so far not been used across the country.. However, under the new bill passed by a 25-8 vote in the Senate, it is now included in their methods of execution, along with the electric chair. Robert Dunham of the Death Penalty Information Centre said "No state has carried out an execution using nitrogen hypoxia"..although Mississippi and Oklahoma also have that option but have not used it. Republicans tried to pass a FIRING SQUAD as their option but it was shot down (no pun intended) The pace of executions has slowed in Alabama because of the ongoing legal challenges to lethal injection methods. Trip Pittman said they need ANOTHER method of killing people because of lethal injection not being as viable as it used to be..he tried to sponsor a firing squad but it was changed in the committee. He said "It's important to have another option. I think nitrogen hypoxia is a very humane way to implement and to execute our people" Dying by this method would seal the doomed inmate in an airtight chamber where the nitrogen gas is pumped causing death by lack of oxygen. It is invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that has 80% of the air we breath but is lethal in concentrated doses.
