I think most of my distaste for the game stems from Squall having no redeeming qualities as well as the cast and plot being mostly forgettable. Somehow there are people who really like this game, but I'm truly baffled by it. The only good thing about this game is the ongoing mini-game Triple Triad, which is actually really really awesome.

8 does enough interesting stuff to be worth playing, but the plot gets really stupid really fast and Squall is one of the worst protagonists ever.

9 > 7 > Tactics > the rest.

Like VII is in strong consideration for a goat title. VIII has some neat things but ultimately the story is a piece of work. IX just doesn't have the strongest cast and HAS TOO MANY FUCKING RANDOM BATTLES. Also, a lot of the strong attacks take a fucking hour. Like you think casting knights of the round to kill like a weapon a few times was bad? Try casting like a fucking summon animation EVERY BATTLE THAT TAKES ALMOST AS LONG. (okay not that long, but it's like why).

After the first time, the long summon animation becomes fairly uncommon.

I like all threepretty equally. IX is interesting because i like all of the cast equally as well. Vii is a piece of timeless art. VIII is objectively stupid and has the worst characters of the series, but for some reason its the most fun to play.

I mean, you could just not use summons if it's that big of a thing for you.

Final Fantasy VIII probably isn't the best game, but I definitely found it the most interesting from a plot, character and mechanics point of view. I honestly don't think you're going to be blown away by any of them for the first time in 2017... but outside of all the hype and disappointment people felt about VIII when it was released I think you'll be able to appreciate the ways it deviated from the standard RPG formula.

Also assuming that you're playing all of these on PC. I wouldn't even bother with the PSX version of IX. The speed is just... I don't even know how it was released.

You can really lose yourself in VIII if you like to geek out on rpg game mechanics.

If that's not your thing, then it comes down to the story and characters which are very LOVE or HATE. There is no middle ground.
