What kind of service do you receive most frequently when going out?

This poll does not account for 'picking up food and taking it to go.' If that is your most common dining out experience discount that experience and pick whatever is the second most common for you.

I anticipate this to be the most common answer for board 8, unless delivery is the most common

but we shall see what the poll says

hard data is truth

hard data is life

If we're going to a sit down restaurant, it's usually a buffet. Living in Vegas has spoiled us.

I usually do drive-through, so I went with the fast food option. Interesting developments there, some restaurants do a hybrid where you get your own drink but they'll bring you your food when it's finished cooking or while you're getting your drink (Penn Station, Boston Market).

pretty much always either fast food or hybrid (you pay up front at the counter like a fast food place; a waiter brings your food, but doesn't do anything else). actual sit-down restaurants are too expensive.

that's awesome. I wish I had the discipline for that. I think my longest streak of self-prepping all of my own meals was around 2 years, might have been edging closer to three. usually something happens and I end up being really busy or just needing to rely on takeout or eating out for various reasons and then I fall back into the habit of eating out rather than making my own food.

I was pretty sick for the second half of 2016 for example so there was a period of time where I just didn't have much energy. after that I haven't felt motivated to get back into shopping and cooking my own meals yet but I'm thinking about it a lot lately. maybe over the summer I'll start getting back into a good routine. I also eat way healthier when I prep my own meals so that's another benefit.

Kind of 50/50?

I just found a new fantastic local restaurant where we order at the counter, then our food is delivered to the table / we're waited on from then on.

count that as the first option on this poll. you do have to go and order your own food but ultimately you're waited on in the end. there's a sweet deli right across the street from where I work and do research which is like this hybrid style. I end up going there around once a week as a result due to proximity bonus.

Never? Or you just went a few years without making a habit of eating out? I honestly figured part of being an adult was going to meet people for dinner and/or drinks. Hard to imagine never eating out unless I didn't ever hang out with others.

I might have gone out to eat a few times for social events, yeah. it's hard to imagine that I NEVER went out. but I definitely approached each week with a plan of cooking all of my own meals, and I generally stuck to that plan every week (sometimes even for a month or more at a time) without deviating.

also during this period I was probably at my most physically active. when my friends and I made plans it was usually to go play tennis or play catch in the park or even hit baseballs for a few hours. wasn't really into dating much during that time frame, but there were a few instances -- generally where I invited a person over and cooked for them.

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense. The two and a half years I was eating vegan is probably the closest I've come to that. It was just a pain to go out to eat when all I could get was an overpriced salad that wasn't all that great, or fries.

Now I feel like I'm eating out all the time. My girlfriend is much more social than me so we're always going out to bars/restaurants to hang out with friends. This topic really put into perspective how little fast food I eat now. I've always LOVED fast food and when I really think about it, now I'm only eating at sit-down restaurants and it's pretty rare that I have fast food.

I had a vegan friend who ate out a lot. I think he mostly went to mexican places to have like bean, tortilla, etc. based dishes

does this seem valid? I don't know the rules of being a vegan so I don't know if he was doing it correctly

Yeah, as a general rule it's much easier to find vegan fair at "ethnic" places than those that focus on American cuisine. When I was still in Vancouver eating out and being vegan was easy. Tons of Indian/Chinese/Japanese/Mexican etc. options or literally pizza and burgers just made with vegan ingredients. In a smaller town... no chance. But at the same time I decided to try it for health reasons (I've always been skinny, but I figured if I could never gain weight, might as well eat right and see how that feels) so it didn't matter so much to me that the food didn't have meat/dairy as much as I cared about whether or not it was a decent meal.

Even though I eat anything now, I'll often go for a vegan dish if the menu has any. I find I just feel better afterwards.

it's probably the first one because takeout doesn't count. if i'm sitting down somewhere, it's usually not gonna be fast food because i'd rather have something better and frankly it costs about the same.

i also can't remember a clear time when i sat down with my fast food. i think that was... chick-fil-a a year ago or so? usually if i'm ordering fast food i'm also leaving with it, not sitting down to eat there.
