I believe the current thinking is that safeguards will need to be in place to ensure that the ultimate objective in their programming/nature will protect human interests.

For example, if you put "ensure human happiness" as the number 1 objective, a machine might interpret that as "put human on a heroin drip permanently".

Simplistic example but you get the idea.

which would make an even smarter a.i.

so once you can make something that is smarter than you that can do what you do, you enter an infinite cycle on oneup-ness

A human isn't smart enough to create a technology like that. Humanity is. There are a dozen pathways to getting there, it's inevitable, including the brute force method of brain slicing a brain and scanning it with enough granularity once our our scanning tech and computer speeds are there, if all other methods fail.
