Honestly it sounds pretty good assuming you have certain things right. Like you're in a loving relationship, you've got an alright job that you at least somewhat enjoy. Having decent working class neighbors where if if you don't align politically you can still be friendly and have conversations with, having a family.

I'd give anything to have a life like that in all honesty.

It's based upon dreams that
1) are only something white people by and large pursue
2) steady upper middle class income, which is unobtainable in a capitalist system and therefore plays into the fact that such wealth can only be obtained through the underpayment of others
3) has also generally been kept out of reach of minorities who do manage to get upper middle class incomes (see: housing market crash)

Everyone has thier own interpretation of the American Dream. To me it was largely about being finicially independent. Owning a home goes a long way to this as after you pay it off you no longer have to pay rent (although you still have to pay taxes and upkeep) and will have an asset that will typically increase with value overtime and can usually be sold with the profits being tax free. I fail to see how being a renter is a superior arrangment.

Having a fulfilling marriage and having kids is pretty much a universal aspiration among nearly every culture.

Working a regular job, being able to afford 2 cars, own your house, have a few kids and send them to college to have their own dream, take care of your wife so she can take care of the home.

That dream is dead for people making less than $70k
