As someone who watched the show when it was airing back in the 90s, and as someone who excitedly backed the kickstarter project..

I've only watched the first episode, but it felt just as I wanted it to feel. Everyone chosen is just excellent at what they need to do, and it all feels like a natural extension of the original show. Trust me, its worth watching and giving a chance. You can tell a lot of love went into it.

I'm a huge fan of the original series and... while I don't hate this new version of it, there's some problems I have with it. Some that might be fixed as they do more of the episodes (the jokes are really rushed out there, the delivery of the jokes is a little flat, the voices all blend together). But others in what they choose to focus this MST3K on being. I think it's leaning a little too hard on Joel's Hollywood connections, and it is missing the "random comedians from Minnesota" vibe that the original had. I'm also thinking the jokes tend towards Joel's comedic sensibilities (goofy, non-offensive) than Mike, who was a little bit more biting in his criticisms (and I found that to be funnier).

Overall, it's sort of a big meh. The original show didn't really find its legs until the third season, and it has the fanbase to get to a place where it has its own voice. But right now it's kind of feeling like, why did they do this?

I watched the first episode. It was... mixed. It doesn't entirely capture the spirit of the original.

I think that's really the problem with it - it's trying too hard to capture the spirit of the original. At this point it's been nearly two decades, you might as well create something new.

ClunkerSlim posted...
But I wish they had paid for more expensive movies to make fun of. Could they really not get anything better than some Danish monster movie?

Honestly as far as what the old MST3K could get, that was a pretty high-quality movie. I'm a fan of the movie choices. I think part of the fun of the show is that they bring attention to overlooked bad movies, and they did a pretty good job of finding some the Internet has barely made fun of. It would be a little cringey to see, for example, the "Sharknado" MST3K episode.

The only thing I really don't like about it is how the technology works. Otherwise I'm a big fan and consider it the successor to MST3K. I was always more of a Mike guy than a Joel guy.

There are or were videos that were pre-synced. Not sure if they are still out there.

Yeah, they are too quick though.

It's both how fast they are and also the delivery which seems forced. Like I think I'm hearing someone remembering their lines rather than a spontaneous comment.

I guess I'm a unique case in that I rarely if ever watch the host segments and just skip to the riffing. I feel like most who end up not liking the show don't really get past the awful host segments that drag on and on

I feel like they're trying to hit every target to make that bridge between the old and the new, and in doing so they are metaphorically spinning a lot of plates, trying to please every crowd. But, let's not forget how this show started in the first place, and it wasn't for it's quality, but it evolved, won a Peabody Award, and others, and was able to rise like a phoenix from the ashes against all odds and hopes decades later. That ain't nothin', ya know. They deserve some room to evolve as its orgins did as well.

I'm at the point with it where it's like, I can see that the jokes are funny, but I'm not laughing that much because the delivery is just so bad. Jonah is just not good at telling a joke. He's awkward.

I think also I'm struggling with the fact that this very much the show that Joel knew, and it's barely like the Mike era of the show (which I thought had terrible host segments, but whenever they got a good bad movie, no one could make fun of it better).

Most of the crap Mike cut (like the letter reading, and the invention exchange) was pointless filler that didn't really fit with the core of the show. The invention exchange was literally just crap shoveled from Joel's stand-up.

Also sometimes Joel would have just excellent material for movies (he was able to get Godzilla movies for Christ's sake) and the riffing of them wasn't really that funny. Whereas Mike usually had to work with really dreadful movies and somehow managed to make them passable. I respect that more. Making me break a smile during something as miserable as Hobgoblins is really a high human achievement.

I also started with Mike, and his self deprecating humor really grew on me.. plus just seemed to have genuine synergy with Tom and Crow. I watched some of the Joel ones, and it just felt... less energetic? Like everybody was high and just giggling...

His humor did tend to lean on being more goofy than cutting. Also it tended to lean heavily on obscure pop culture references for the sake of them. I can see why others like that more, a friendlier sort of helpful riffing, but I liked the Mike era's harder edge. Sometimes it can be seen in Joel episodes (unsurprisingly since Mike was the head writer during most of that) but it was too few and far between (Mitchell being the weirdest case, where it was practically a Mike episode but with Joel)
