I gotta go with the cross style. I guess the PS one is basically the same thing but I'm not sure, I haven't played a PS console in a long time. The ones with diagonals always suck. I haven't really played enough with completely separate buttons to have a strong opinion on it, unless you count the N64 C buttons.

Cross, but probably because it is the one I have the most experience with. Playstation ones aren't that bad, but cross is better. And I HATE compass d-pads, absolutely horrible.

If we include N64 C buttons (since I haven't tried the switch), it was OK, but I hate groves in my buttons. Would rather they be smooth.

Switch's "d-pad" isn't terrible, but it's not really a d-pad.

I guess the PlayStation, but the best ever is the NeoGeo Pocket Color almost-a-joystick, followed by the Sega Nomad's almost-a-joystick.

With a real joystick and the Dpad relegated to camera control, though, it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Nintendo ruined console gaming for years by scrapping the joystick for a Dpad, thank goodness joysticks came back.

ps style but a good cross dpad is just as good. most nintendo controllers have a good one. some controllers have cross dpads and yet still manage to suck.

When designed well, 8-points can be pretty nice. But half the time, they're atrocious.

I've always preferred the Nintendo'esque style of D-pads.

Xbox 360 is probably my favourite controller overall but its D-pad just sucks. Still like the controller though because it fits my hands pretty well.
