we come from the water we gestate in amniotic fluid water is life. You'll learn how to swim on your own if you spend a few moments in water. It's just better to have those first moments in a swimming pool instead of speeding rapids or 5-foot waves. All you have to do is go to the pool for a day, watch people, try to emulate that, and tweak it until you find something that works. Not having the time or money for lessons isn't really an excuse.

I know how to swim, but my girlfriend doesn't because she grew up in an area with no swimming pools/swimming lakes/etc. My dad grew up in Minnesota and has never learned how to swim.

Though I guess the motions are a bit more specific than that. It's an easily learned and easily memorized skill, at least.
