why would you not want to swim? its inherent in all humans.

we come from the water
we gestate in amniotic fluid

water is life.

What if you saw someone drowning and you could have saved them?

seriously, its mind blowing someone would willfully not learn to swim.

You'll learn how to swim on your own if you spend a few moments in water. It's just better to have those first moments in a swimming pool instead of speeding rapids or 5-foot waves. All you have to do is go to the pool for a day, watch people, try to emulate that, and tweak it until you find something that works. Not having the time or money for lessons isn't really an excuse.

But how would they if they don't live near bodies of water or swimming pools?

people move, travel, go on day trips....do you not live???

Poor black people aren't exactly known for their day trips.

It will be dulled, but they will not be incapable. A cat that doesn't practice can still hunt. People who don't practice swimming will drown. How is an instinctual action?

I know how to swim, but my girlfriend doesn't because she grew up in an area with no swimming pools/swimming lakes/etc. My dad grew up in Minnesota and has never learned how to swim.

It's not essential, but it's a good skill to have and leads to more fun.

they aren't swimming, it's an unconscious reflex: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infant_swimming#Infant_swimming_or_diving_reflex

Same difference. The only reason they can't do It is because they lack the strength. They obviously know the motions

So if that is true then it's safe to release my cat into the wild and it'll hunt good?

Just because it's instinctual does mean you can always do it. Those people who claim not to be able to swim can do so just fine if they stop flapping their arms around and screaming.

Most house cats that don't go outside manage to catch and kill mice that get into a house.

You should at least know that kicking your feet, waving your arms, and keeping air in your lungs would at least help you survive in water.

Though I guess the motions are a bit more specific than that. It's an easily learned and easily memorized skill, at least. Taking a swim lesson would help even if you don't need it.

Most people who actively drown don't do so because they sit completely still and sink. It's because they wear themselves out through excessive movement.

Essential? No. A person could live a fairly regular life without being put into situations where they need to swim.

Highly recommended? Absolutely.

Everyone should be able to at least know how to float on water so they don't drown and can be rescued.

But let's be honest. If they can't swim, they don't know they are buoyant
