I was gonna say "you can at least get out of an abusive relationship", but that's a bit insulting.

Not all families are abusive, but if you're in an abusive one, you more or less have to deal with that shit until you're old enough to get out of it and stand on your own two feet. There's a lot to say about abusive relationships - psychological scarring, gaslighting, control over money, ID or phone - but if you can get a good support network, you as an adult can get out. It's hard as shit, and there's always a chance of yourself getting murdered, but more often than not you're not legally bound to them in the way a parent and child are.

Of course, it's super fucked up when an abuser does have legal control over their victim, such as abusive carers towards handicapped/elderly people.
