TC completely overestimates that people are competent with technology and can exist without a large IT department supporting said tech.

well I'm not really trying to take a side on this but that is a good point I didn't really consider. Still though, I don't think everyone in the future can just work for IT.

i'm not arguing over whether or not it fits the first definition. i'm arguing that the first definition is incomplete by the standards of the modern usage of the word.

Except it's complete by the standards of the modern usage of the word. You saying that "nobody uses it in that way" doesn't mean that's the case.

Hell, even in my line of work, I deal primarily with robots. Routers, switches, and firewall are essentially just robots.

okay, ask your IT tech to help you with the router robot next time you are having issues with it. see how much you get mocked.

I am the IT tech, and I understand that they're essentially robots.

then tell your boss the next time it craps out that you need to order a new router robot. see what kind of puzzled reaction you get.

Calling it a router robot would be redundant and pointless. "Router" would suffice. It still doesn't change the fact that it's a robot. By me calling it a router, he would understand that it's a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically.

That's not your point at all. It makes you sound dumb because it's redundant, and people understand what you're referring to without adding the word robot on. That doesn't mean the devices aren't robots.

Actually, I do. That's why I'm a network engineer, because I actually understand how routers, switches, firewalls, etc. function, and I can design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot enterprise level networks.

All of those devices I mention fit the definition of "robot" that I bolded very well.

Why would a self-checkout lane be called a robot? The lane doesn't perform any complex functions.

People on reddit exaggerate how much automation is going to take over jobs in the near future, even jobs like cashiers.

People don't like to deal with robots.

automation =/= robots

do you call the self-checkout lane at your local grocery store a robot?

It is a robot.

But why do you think the lines with human cashiers are still full even though they have the self-checkout lanes in most grocery stores now?

you were saying?

I think he misunderstood you and thought you said self-checkout machine and not self-checkout lane. A self-checkout machine is most definitely a robot as it is a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. A self-checkout lane is just an area within a store that doesn't perform any complex functions.

The bigger issue with those is that it provides no useful benefit to the consumer, apart from catering to impatience.

Eh, I would argue that time saved is a very good benefit to the customer. Especially at Walmart where they regularly only have a few checkout lanes open while most of the employees are in the back working on albums.

so are you trying to one-up me semantics argument-wise or what? you must really think you are f***ing clever.

obviously i meant self-checkout machine. there is no reason to not understand that, in the context of this discussion, "self-checkout lane" and "self-checkout machine" are synonymous. that being said, i've already made it clear that i am not arguing in any way whatsoever that anything doesn't fit the first definition of robot. i don't know why you insist on repeating that almost word for word in multiple posts now. is there something wrong with your brain? did i break you?

It's not my fault if you can't word your posts properly. Self-checkout lane" and "self-checkout machine" are not synonymous. A self-checkout lane is just an area where people line up in order to use the self-checkout machine.

lawyering is not a single task.

It encompasses everything from reading documents to find a specific pattern or proof (discovery) to going to court, to drafting contracts and agreements.

Many of these things can indeed be automated.
