So when I saw there was free DLC for a harder difficulty setting, I thought maybe hard mode would be fine for a first play through.

No fucking way, I'm nearing the end of the first dungeon and minibosses and random enemies can just one-shot people and I'm only a level or two behind.

Though maybe this is a P4 situation where the first dungeon is stupidly difficult for no reason and the rest of the game is fine.

Edit: actually it seems that hard mode rreduces experience and money in addition to buffing enemies so that's extra dumb

Yeah. This game makes you pay for not getting Ambushes. Not as drastically as SMT IV, but it is painful.

Hard mode does not change XP or money

Anyone saying it does is misinformed. The only difficulty that reduces those is Merciless. What Hard changes is enemies do 1.6x damage and you do 0.8x damage. That's all.




Anyway I'm playing hard and while I've died a couple times (really mostly on just the end of dungeon boss a couple times, though I did die to a regular fight once against an enemy I'd never seen before [First dungeon] the angel thing) I've not really had too much trouble. Any enemy that is extremely strong you just use a status effect on (sleep is my best friend).

The main thing hard mode effects is resource usage. I had to go 4 regular days into the Palace to finish it because I kept running out of SP.




Also unrelated, does anyone know where to get a forecast in this game? Weather still effects stuff, but I seem to be missing where you go to find out whats coming up...

At least SMTIV gave you "infinite" continues!

I'm fine with relying on Ambushes, since it's tied heavily to the Shadow Thief theme. But it's a great way to drain my SP, especially when some enemies are so tough they need multiple All-Out Attacks to kill, and if they get a turn they one-shot someone.

Basically, while the minibosses don't help, it's mostly Berith's fault. FUCK YOU BERITH

I'm so glad I have Pixie and Silky now. I have a weird habit of not liking to kill female Shadows/Demons. I think it is enhanced now, due to the extra voice clips and negotiation features.

[strategy for that bit if you want help]Also those guys are so easy, they literally never hit me. Don't forget that status effects are actually worth it in Atlus games. Cast Ann's sleep spell on them after hitting them with everyone else, it will skip their turn.

First palace boss might convince me to switch down to normal difficulty. I'm fine until the part where you only have 3 party members and have to make sure you're attacking him several times. I either get the fourth person found out because I'm healing too much, or I die.

On hard he one-shots you THROUGH Tarunda. I only beat them because they decided to go after my party members that couldn't use his weakness.

Maybe you can cheese him with sleep? I dunno.

I've been on hard the whole time and haven't had very much trouble. The first boss took 3-4 tries but didn't require extra grinding or anything.

Attack down status is your friend

Oh and the horses are just oddly OP. I just made them give me items and didn't worry about killing him most of the time.

So I finally got through those guys. The final miniboss was a sleep weak enemy that just died to regular attacks, thank god.

After finding the treasure room and leaving, I sold that $50k healing item and was able to easily max out everyone's equipment with tons to spare. As a result, boss was a cakewalk even though my whole party was level 9. He just couldn't do the damage.

For the time being, use a super low-level persona of your own. That should stop them from dying.

Also, it is 100% possible to do everything on a first playthrough on merciless, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying >_>

Interesting. I just got to it, but I'm still in the introduction phase and haven't hit the full exploration phase.

Also somehow have amassed 40k Yen. I'm assuming the weapon shop will have more expensive stuff, but really feels like Mementos is a good farming spot.

If your only up to 4/11, don't worry, the first few days take quite a while to run through, and while it feels slow at first, it will pick up.

I did one and then plot events happening straight for a week made me literally not even ABLE to return it

Luckily they wave the late fees the first time but its kind of annoying the game can just go 'btw no returning this dvd for you ENJOY THE 1000+ YEN CHARGES' on a whim if it decides to :/

But they are good

EDIT: Though I am getting to a point finally where I feel like I can afford 1k yen pretty easily if I need to so its not that big of a deal after the first couple months probably

Finally beat the second palace boss... took so long mostly due to my own derpiness. I know probably people aren't here yet for the most part but I'ma say what happened anyway


[2nd Palace Final Boss] I thought that the body parts absorbed in pairs and that the eyes absorbed magic and the nose and mouth absorbed physical, so I divided my damage too much. Then I by chance noticed that the nose does not in fact absorb physical on a failed attempt, and went and fused something with Rampage and utterly wrecked the boss.


Yay over complicating things for myself...

Well, I bought the game and spent all day playing.

I'm enjoying it so far, my only complains are that the controls are really awkward for stealth gameplay, and the management thing. Why did it take me all damn day to make two Lockpicks?

Have you ever tried making a lockpick from scratch before?

Also as you get better at making things you'll be able to make much more and varied things in one night (If I make just lockpicks right now for instance, I can do 4+ in one night), so presumably it is an abstraction of your protagonist trying to learn how to do it well and efficiently at first.

Lockpicks are your friend. I keep forgetting the damn day my dvds are due since I haven't really been using the calendar and it doesn't seem to tell you otherwise that HEY today that movie is due back. Got to skip out on late fees twice in a row though so uh guess I got lucky

After I finished off the first Palace boss, I've been spending most of the time at the diner to upgrade Guts. At least I got it up to Lv. 2 already. I'm up to 4/30 right now.
