Disney didn't produce Avatar.

Is Disney just firing back since Universal took Marvel?

The better question is why did they spend so much money to support a franchise that no one has cared about in years

It was huge when it came out, but he's got a point. The hype for Avatar dropped off a cliff.

And do you really think once the new movies are coming out that it won't ramp right back up again? A ridiculous notion.

Because movie studios always make sound business decisions and have never made a movie nobody cares about.

Avatar came out at just the right time when 3d hit it's new stride, it could easily have been another John Carter of Mars had it come out a little later.

The first half of your post is meaningless. Just because it was successful doesn't mean the general public wants 4 more of the fucking things.

To be fair, when they made the original deal with 20th Century Fox back in 2011, there was still major hype for Avatar, and the sequels had already been announced (delays notwithstanding).

Seeing that they're going to be making many sequels, this is the PERFECT time to build up park attractions (since there would be mutual benefit from the old deal; More hype from Disney means more money for the future film creators, and more viewership for the future films means more demand for the Disney attractions / merchandise from the deal).

People will pay good money to see blue nipples.

Let's be real, this is not the first time James Cameron has used nipples to generate interest (and it probably won't be the last).

I mean, it might... but Avatar came and went. It was cool to look at, but that's about it. I can't see the sequel doing as well, because the novelty just won't be there anymore.

Even if they don't do as well as the record breaker of the original, it's highly unlikely any of them will outright flop and being that they're all being filmed together, they're all gonna get released regardless.

It's weird to me that some people seem to have the mindset that if these films weren't to break 1b they would automatically determine them to be failures like they need to surpass the original to be successful and worth anything.

Disney can have their irrelevant Avatar world, because Universal will have Super Nintendo World and that's all that matters.
