The main reason I love Breaking Bad so much is that it feels exactly long enough for the story it tells. It doesn't feel like it was stretched or extended unnecessarily, and it never felt like they were having to contrive reasons to keep the show going (For instance, 24 kind of reached a point of no return there from like season 5 on).

Pretty bad article IMO.

It's not always clear what episodes are gained and what episodes are lost due to shortened seasons. I actually am pretty sure Game of Thrones would be better with longer seasons. Maybe a shortened season rids us of Stranger in a Strange Land and Fire+Water - and/or maybe it rids us of The Long Con or Tricia Tanaka Is Dead.

Also, on HBO, The Sopranos and The Wire were doing short seasons well before 2007, so that's a giant fallacy to suggest that HBO was influenced by that. And on FX, The Shield and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia were already airing short seasons.

24 went with 24-episode seasons for Seasons 7 and 8, which both came after 2008.

I just like the idea that SIASL was such a singularity of terrible that it affected all US TV from then on. I certainly think it affected Lost and may have at least been a cautionary tale to future shows about making sure things had a clear end point.

Different story, and one that I'm entirely on board with - I think it's fantastic for shows to have (somewhat) defined endpoints.

Lost's fourth season was short because of the writer's strike, same with Breaking Bad's first season

I thought 4 was going to be short anyway. I remember it as 4, 5, and 6 were all going to be 16 episodes, but then the writers strike ended up making it 14/17/17 instead (and then 6 gained an additional episode and a half for an extended finale).

I know D&D always thanked SiaSL because it let them go to ABC and negotiate and end date. I still never thought it was THAT awful of an episode. Much better than F+W and not as disappointing as Across the Sea.

Across the Sea was the worst episode. That was a way worse sin than a meaningless bad episode.

I'm guessing SiaSL was a killer because you had to endure 3x01-06 earlier in the year and 3x08 was so amazing. One of the GOAT episodes there.

Not sure if I have a favourite episode. Season 2 finale I remember being good.

Or uh the Constant. Or the Variable? I remember one or both of those episodes being great

I just remember little things with Lost, like Hurley throwing a Hot Pocket at Ben in panic, or that Jack/Ethan fight (actually the episode in s1 (?) where they hunt down Ethan was pretty great), or the guy who spent the whole time doing a Christopher Walken impression

I really struggle to remember like entire episodes. It's been too long!

Flashes is amazing, but The Constant is my favorite episode of anything ever. Desmond episodes were all so good.

Constant was Desmond, Variable was Faraday. Both great.
