Esteemed Board 8 user Terastodon is currently running a topic series pitting cover songs against their originals. There are many amazing covers out there and it's a great series.

There are also many terrible covers out there. I'm a pretty negative person (I probably hate you, the one reading this, for the record) so I thought I'd focus on his bad covers. This is not a "cover vs. original" so much as it is just a look at terrible covers in general.

RULES
1. "They shouldn't touch a classic/This artist should never be covered/I'm stupid" are not reasons to nominate a cover. No song is "uncoverable" and it's a stupid thing to suggest one is. Zero tolerance on this issue.

2. What makes a cover "good" or "bad" to you is totally up to you, except in the case of Rule No. 1.

3. Nominate up to 5 really s***ty covers. Or less. Or more maybe? I don't really know yet.

4. I have no idea how many will eventually be in this contest or what the format will be. Let's get nominations started and see where we end up.

Excellent set of rules.

What is a "cover" for the purposes of this contest?

1. Does it only include studio songs done by recording artists?
2. Or does it also include live versions (or just ones released on albums)?
3. Or does it also count YouTube covers by amateurs?
4. Or does it also count parodies written by Weird Al wannabes that think they're funny when they're not?

This will greatly affect what I nominate, thanks.

Parodies don't count unless they're actual covers of the songs that are parodies because of the style they use.

Live versions always count. Studio versions count. YouTube covers by amateurs ... maybe? If there's something terribly popular or something I suppose but ultimately, there's enough really terrible people out there to fill out this entire contest with things nobody has heard of and I don't think that would be very fun. More established artists would be better.

I mean, I could nominate a classic like "Pokemon Kid" but even that's so unintelligible you can't even tell it's a cover.

Then there's things like American Idol that offer limitless nominations for this. Anything by William Hung, however, can be seen as "so bad it's good" but also as truly awful.

It's probably best to define a "cover" here as something recorded by an artist on a record contract, either for a studio album, a live album, or a single (including YouTube releases). I would think that's the best for the purposes of this contest. Do you agree?

I don't think it has to be for a live album or single. There exist plenty of live recordings of covers from established artists that are phenomenal and plenty that are bad. They just shouldn't be "bad" by way of it being a bad recording. It should be bad on its own merits.

It seems like you think established artists should be the priority here. What I am insinuating here is that it's something one could find on YouTube, whether one wants to or not (Me? I don't.). It's impossible to find a concert recording of something performed live once by someone in 1994, for example, and therefore it's too obscure to be nominated, even if that's an established artist.

While this is hilarious, it's not a cover of Adele. It's "art". Some kind of "spoken word" thing she does/did.

I'm not even sure what to call it, I just know it's not a cover, or it would win in a landslide.


On a sidenote @Snake5555555555 , you don't like Faith by Limp Bizkit? I mean I understand not liking the band, but man that song is the knees. I love me some WHAM! and I think the LB version is better.

I think the Behind Blue Eyes cover is awful.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not and will not defend Limp Bizkit. However, they do have two decent songs and Faith happens to be on of them.

Break Stuff is the other one. If you say every other one of their songs are trash, I won't disagree, but those 2 are just good family fun.
