It's for a bedroom. I plan to use it on a swivel stand so that I can turn it to face my chair when I'm on my PC or my bed. In both situations, it will be used either for watching things, playing games, or as a monitor (yes, even in bed, I got a wireless keyboard with a touchpad for this).

In my chair or sitting on my bed, I would be about 2-3 feet away from the screen and 5 feet when lying down.

I just bought this TV less than two weeks ago:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-32-class-31-5-diag--led-1080p-smart-hdtv-silver/4380083.p?skuId=4380083

Samsung 32" 1080p. It's a good TV, and I enjoyed playing Zelda on it. Though I made the mistake of watching someone play Zelda on a 60+ inch TV and since then mine has felt kinda small. I thought, what the hell, it was only $280. Then I looked for a better stand for it and saw this TV:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-40-class-40-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-dark-titan/5622308.p?skuId=5622308

$20 more gets me 8 more inches and 4K. Though would that be too big? Anything I'm missing compared to the one I already have? I have a few days left to return my TV.

Thanks for your opinions on this.

4k feels like way overkill for a 40" TV, especially one you're going to be sitting just a couple of feet away from IMO.

Oh, and for reference, I usually sit about 1.5 feet away from my 24 inch monitor, so I'm used to sitting up close to screens. I tend to use my PC more than my TV and it's been like this for years. I also dropped console gaming several years ago in favor of PC and handhelds, didn't use a TV for a few months at one point, and am now just taking TVs seriously again.

Would the extra 8 inches make the TV too big for the distance I'll be from it?

Also, is HDR worth anything right now? I see some for $550. Seems like it might be like when I decided to not go with 4K when I bought my living room TV in 2014 (also 40", but 4K at the time had a $200-$300 premium at the time with minimal content for it).

55" would be a good size for a 4k tv in that room.

HDR is only truly worth it on a true HDR capable set. A lot advertise HDR but cannot properly display it / have enough nits /wcg for it.

40" at 5 feet is really cutting it close on the threshhold to be able to notice 4k.

This is more personal opinion than science, but I would say its debatably too close at 2-3 feet but just fine at 5 feet. I find it worse for a TV to be too small than to be too big, so buying for the 5 foot range even though it may see less use is still ok.

Personally my console gaming is done at about 6-8 feet on a 50 inch and it seems perfect. Bigger is also always useful when playing local multiplayer.

I'm leaning towards it more, though I like the features of my current TV a bit more since it has a headphone jack and the ability to connect Bluetooth headphones but I feel like I might be able to do that with the larger TV if I buy a converter for it.

That said, I finally connected my laptop to this TV today and started to use a wireless keyboard. It's awesome, but yeah, using the TV as a glorified monitor has limits when sitting away from it.

Anyone use a 4K monitor or TV, especially at around 40"? How is it?

I had to change display scaling options to be able to see certain things on the screen when sitting 5 feet away.

I just bought the TV online since I see that it's selling out everywhere. I'm picking it up today. I will report back about it.

Thanks everyone!

So I did the exchange and bought the 40". The difference is massive...literally. From the brief time I used it, it seems to have nice colors and resolution, it looks great. The only problem is that it seems really big. My room is about 9.5x11' so I don't have a ton of space (which is why my TV would have to double as a second monitor). I already have a 40" in my living room that I almost never use (and who knows why I didn't put that one up first to see how it would fit).

In every way aside from the remote and lack of audio options besides optical audio out, this TV is simply much better than the one I had. I really do like it, but the size feels like it's too much in terms of space, though being close to it and not too far, it is amazing. I'm so conflicted.

Right now, I'm planning to try it for a few days and return it if I don't like it. I'm thankful that Best Buy has a pretty good return policy but also concerned because I already returned a laptop last year and a TV today, and they track and ban people that return things excessively.

You will get used to it.
They always seem big at first, until it settles in.
Then they seem normal.
Then small.
Then you want a bigger one in.
