I guess I had to make the topic

http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/requiem-for-a-dil

So SMBC just came out with one of the most megaton comics ever. It uses dilbert so it's related to this topic. But also it's about something I noticed when working in a couple offices for a while. People complained so much about work, Dilbert-esque.

And it just makes no sense. Your job is in super high demand, you have the resume and education. If you hate it, why are you wasting your life away here. Why don't you do side projects or focus on your family more? The only answer, which has become increasingly clear over my career, is that these people are actually quite happy and content with their current life. And they HATE that. It really is the hardest pill to swallow.

For me I stayed at jobs because I was scared to go on the market. I was more afraid of being unemployed than of being stuck at a crappy job, and it took lots of coaxing to get me to explore other options.

Now I like my job(s) though!

I would just add that after they see this work in college, they continue to apply it later in life expecting it will work just as well (and then it doesn't, and then you get Trump)

Poe's Law is real

I've heard a lot of theory that on dating sites, it's much better to make super-specific asks about the type of woman you're looking for, because it signals that you are probably in high demand such that you have the ability to be really picky. Even girls who clearly don't meet your requirements might respond because they want to feel "good enough." It's basically pre-emptive negging.

Whereas, if you say something like "I'm just looking for a human female that doesn't murder puppies" that signals that you're a desperate loser. If you provide no standard, then there is no achievement of being "picked" by you. No woman wants to date a man who would date anyone.

How to tell someone hasn't stepped foot on a college campus in 5+ years

They are chock full of alt right idiot edge lords, in far greater density than real life. Where's the huge thesaurus-fueled diatribes explaining THAT phenomenon? (there's actually a bunch out there since it's such an obvious/easy thing to write about)

It really seems like the vast majority of political hatred comes from this weird rose-tinted nostalgia of college years. College culture always coincidentally is ruined exactly the year after they graduated.

Democrats are all like "man people were so open and equal and liberal to new ideas" and Republicans are like "back in the day we all worked hard and got what we deserved and didn't complain about anything" even though neither of those things are how college is.

All because they're disappointed with post-college life and adulthood in general. Pretty sad.

this is the first time ive really felt the brunt of my job

working 12+ hour days constantly

manager is never available to talk, just pops in once in awhile to say a bunch of obviously wrong stuff but it doesn't matter because he's in charge

then the team lead tells me to do a bunch of different (and yet still wrong) stuff

My latest project for work has involved a lot of research regarding public infrastructure construction. This isn't particularly shocking, but it's interesting to note how the so-called stimulus bills end up amounting to nothing. I made an awesome graph but I'm probably not allowed to share it. But basically, transportation infrastructure construction grows at like 2-3% per year, regardless of what bills they pass. If they pass some bill requiring that X billion be spent on infrastructure, they just reduce the "baseline" spending such that it still only grows by 2-3%. Further proof that it's all a shell game. Some of my colleagues were pretty surprised by it. I wasn't surprised by the concept, but with how easy it is to prove out and how much of a point the graph makes with like 1 hour of research.

Come on man, I expect this kind of stuff from Lasa but you generally do better. We've been over this a million times.

1) Of course they have a right to set whatever policy they want, I am not suggesting someone use force to allow "aggressive cleavage" into their show.

2) The point is to draw distinction towards hypocrisy. In my own personal opinion, you do not "promote female empowerment" by measuring skirt length.

3) Just because something is financially successful does not mean all libertarians are required to personally endorse it.

4) I'd actually argue that the market has decided in favor of booth babes. If not, there would be no need to explicitly ban them. Companies simply wouldn't use them.

5) To suggest that PAX's success - relative to other conferences - is due to skirt-measuring, is quite a leap, and I'm going to want to see some proof of that. Is this the ONLY thing that makes PAX different from E3? Also, how long have they been doing this? Gonna guess it wasn't original policy from day one.

Man the article Kenri posted is even more rich

The major addition to the policy stipulates that the models need to be "educated about the product," and "partial nudity" has been banned.

So they're ALSO interested in passing judgment (presumably only on attractive and/or improperly dressed women) on who counts as a "real gamer" or not. Wonder how they plan on measuring that one? Go around and give a gaming pop quiz to every woman who looks like she's probably not REALLY into games? Do you get kicked out if you can't articulate indoctrination theory, or summarize why Thrall is partially responsible for Garrosh's war crimes?

uh, pretty sure that's not an argument i've ever made.

you may be referring to our debate about privatized education but perhaps you misunderstood the point i was making there, which was "it's pretty lolworthy that you bash one of the most popular forms of education that actually IS privatized - the sudbury style - into the ground." my point wasn't that you're not allowed to criticize sudbury education, it was that this goes against your "the free market solves everything" claim. if humans are cool and smart and wonderful, why do they "ruin their children's future" (to use your words) by sending them to crap schools the moment they're allowed to choose what kind of education they get? sure, public education sucks, but at least that doesn't generally ruin the future of the children who get it.
