i've been holding off on starting any lengthy book for like a couple weeks because I knew Mass Effect was coming out and there was a possibility that i could just be focusing on that. so i've just been reading a bunch of children's/YA stuff (i.e. books i can finish easily/in one sitting).

well i never thought i'd feel this way but last night i couldn't do it anymore. i felt like i couldn't read this stuff anymore. i felt burned out. i felt like i needed "adult" books.

also i still haven't started Mass Effect.

Neil Gaiman on why libraries and reading are important

so this made me recall something that i'll never truly be able to forget.

9th grade English class, still pretty early into the school year (October-ish i think). The teacher told us to take out paper for an ice-breaker-like activity. She would read statements about activities over the summer (e.g. I went somewhere out-of-state during the summer) and if it was true for you, you would tally it and by the end it was supposed to compare summer experiences for everyone in the class or something.

Couple statements into it and several people in the class start giggling and making snide comments, presumably because of how unlikely it was for the statements to be true for people. The teacher is getting visibly irritated as this goes on and then she gets to the statement, "I have read at least five books over the summer." Well, people started laughing out loud. She stops the activity and then angrily demands that we spend the rest of the class period writing her a note explaining why exactly we found this activity funny and ridiculous and why we were unable to focus for that time. Obviously I didn't find it funny at all and was probably not sure what had just happened so I didn't write anything. Bell rings, people pass around their papers so they can all be collected at the ends of the rows and I caught a glimpse of the note that this kid Salami wrote, saying "We were laughing because it was funny and it was ridiculous to think that we would read over the summer."

I felt so many things at once that I had to be still for a bit. It was anger that I was even in the same class as these idiots, disappointment that these guys didn't understand how great reading anything could be, dread that a bunch of other people probably indeed think that reading anything was "ridiculous" and laughable, insecurity at thinking i could be labeled as something unflattering or that I was weird in some way. Of course I knew on some level there were people who didn't read but there was what seemed like definitive proof of this sentiment and all the implications that came with it.

I have to wonder how my teacher felt reading some of those.

Not having read the link but having read your story, I'm upset on your behalf and also embarrassed for people in general. I also feel slightly ashamed because I probably would have laughed. It just seems unlikely for most kids. (Five, in fairness, is also a fairly big ask - that's about two per month.)

yeah i get that five may be seem like a lot to some kids. but the part that I read from his note didn't really mention the number as being the ridiculous aspect but the idea of reading in general. if anything the notion of people reading FIVE WHOLE BOOKS made it more hilarious. which just makes it more depressing to me.

Whoops, skipped a book

The Fifth Elephant, the 24th Discworld book, finished. The Duke of Ankh was tasked by Lord Vetinari to go on a diplomatic mission to Uberwald to attend the Low King of the Dwarves' coronation. Unfortunately for Samuel Vimes, he's the Duke now. As he and his wife sets off on a working holiday, Carrot is left in charge of the City Watch. However, circumstances surrounding Angua meant Carrot left his post to the other senior officer... Fred Colon. To top it off, mysterious burglaries and murder back at Ankh Morpork seem to hint at something more sinister. Vimes has more things to worry about, such as Dwarves, Vampires, and Werewolves, and finding out the real truth of the thing and the whole of the thing.

Best Part:
- Vimes gets the spotlight here and he's really showing off his stuff.
- Lady Sybil finally gets to share the spotlight alongside her husband, and has powerful moments of her own, like her breaking down when she thinks she disappointed Sam during the hostage situation, standing up to Serafine and escaping the Werewolves' castle, and even used Opera to stop a bloodbath
- LMAO Fred Colon self-destructed faster than Azula did in The Last Airbender. I love that because of how horribly he ran the watch (from 60 to only 5 recruits remain in the roster), the entire sprawling crime scene of Ankh Morpork stopped because of fear of what Commander Vimes would do when he returns and found out what Fred did. I still don't get what happened to Fred's sugar cubes though.
- Lady Margolotta finally shows up! Vetinari's waifu is one cool lady. I love her and her pink jumper embroidered with bats and the dog that suspiciously looks like a giant rat. Best part is totally Vetinari going all misty eyed remembering her and Margolotta prying info about Vetinari from Vimes.
- The Low King is a pretty cool dude as well, sees through everything once Vimes explained things, and even managed to force a confession out of Dee.
- GASPODE'S BACK YAAAAAYYYYY!!!
- Inigo Skimmer had a lot of potential as an Assassin sent to guard Vimes, and seemed like he was starting to see Vimes's way, but alas, Wolfgang got to him first. At least he had Oddjob's hat, +1 cool points.
- Wolfgang is a scary, scary villain. Part dumb, part cunning, and all muscle, the dude can tear apart any human easily and easily toyed with Vimes and a spy, and made short work of an Skimmer, Carrot, and Gavin. It took Gaspode to take him down the first time, and the second time Angua fought him to a standstill and she's still messed up afterwards (though that's more out of fear from being eternally stalked), and Vimes finally had to step in and put him down. I love Vimes' reasoning for not saying any of the quips he thought of. Wolfgang just needed to be put down. I love how Vimes killed him too, with the mortar.
- The game was just ****ing cruel
- I love that Death latched onto Vimes now that Rincewind is relatively safe

Another excellent City Watch entry... though it's more of a Vimes book. I wasn't sure if I preferred Jingo to it or not... ehh. Still, yay Margolotta

so i just finished A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen and it was pretty cool, although i'm not sure that's the right word to describe the utter disintegration of an 8-year marriage. it's apparently a pretty well-known play but it was never mentioned to me for the longest time. i can't find exactly where this quote was in the play so i looked it up online but i thought it was pretty funny spoken by the husband character.

"I wouldn’t be a man if your feminine helplessness didn’t make you twice as attractive to me"

again, i'm not sure if that's the right word to use here but ha.

"You can't think about just one person while you're saving the world"

"So easily does a thief of time repay his debts"

"Even with nougat you can have a perfect moment"

Thief of Time, the 26th Discworld book, finished. This is a story about time. It could have started with the founder of the History Monks, Wen the eternally surprised, realizing the true nature of time. Intimately. It might also have started when a disturbed young clockmaker was contracted to make the most accurate clock of all. It might even have started when Susan was given a Grimm Fairy Tales book by her grandfather, Death, in the middle of teaching a class. Or possibly when a talented thief in Ankh-Morpork was recruited by the History Monk and soon was forced on Lu-Tze as his apprentice. Regardless of what the true beginning is, this is the story of Time, and how it can be stopped and of those who seek to prevent it.

Best Parts:
- Lobsang, Susan, Death, Lu-Tze, and Myria/Unity. Best main character cast? HMM... well Jeremy wasn't that good, but the rest are just ****ing stellar and great characters. Lobsang + Lu-Tze and Susan + Lobsang and Susan + Unity were just fantastic
- The Auditors are out in full ****ing force now. Before they tried the clock scheme again, these ****ers actually sent a goddamn meteor to destroy the Discworld, but A'Tuin ain't having none of that ****. He ATE the meteor.
- In addition, human auditors are such fascinating characters. Between Myria/Unity and the new Auditors, their desperate efforts to understand the human experience is... well, something else. Dying from tasting chocolate is ****ing brilliant BTW.
- lol nobody respects Rule Number One. Well, except for that poor fellow in the dojo. Poor Lu-Tze though, he's all torn up about his failure with the first clock
- Lobsang is just great, like stealing from Lu-Tze, stopping the procrastinators perfectly (twice), and taking the time to notice that there's time to admire the birds in their quest to save the world.
- Death seeing first hand the effects of humanity on his fellow horsemen (good on War on getting married) and going thank goodness I haven't changed is ****ing hillarious man
- The Yeti bit was brilliant foreshadowing. Yes, they've cut his head off XD oh Lu-Tze you're the best. Save State lives is very interesting.
- When the clock stopped, oh man the book kicks it into high gear.
- The four horsemen are finally together once again since the Apocralypse in Sourcery (nice to see they have their horses too)... and this time, they're fighting to save humanity! HELL YEAH! The final battle doesn't go that smoothly however, as the Auditors fought back and forced the humans within the horsemen to become dominant and prevent them from using their powers on them... AND THEN RONNIE SOAK AKA CHAOS JOINS AND ****'S GOING DOWN! Too bad we don't see the actual final battle, but with Chaos there to prevent the Auditors from enforcing their rules on War, Pestilence, Famine, and ****ing Death, the result is a foregone conclusion.
- Holy **** Lu-Tze beat Time himself using Deja-Fu! Of course, Lobsang could destroy him at any time, but that's just rude and breaking the rules.
- Susan's "of course" when she sees Lobsang is gone. Heartbreaking man :(. Unity's conversation with Susan afterwards, while hilarious with Susan subtly trying to force the conversation to stop using cues that an Auditor would have no idea what their meanings are, got dark quick with her suicidal thoughts. They could have been gal pals man, non-humans trying their damnedest to be humans
- The entire epilogue actually, from Lobsang's return to the History Monks, the duel, the ceremony, their final conversation (D'aww giving Lu-Tze the only thing he wants), Unity giving up on life and revealed to have a soul, and Susan finally having a perfect moment (I ship it. I ship it so hard)

I've thought long and hard here. This and Reaper Man are my absolute two favorite Discworld books, and they just so happen to be about Death. Well, this book is more about Susan (okay so it's more about Lobsang), and I've been mulling on this for quite some time (finished this book rather fast. That's how much I loved it). Went with my guts, but if I think on it again I'd probably switch them again. So yeah, the final Susan and Death book gets the number 2 spot. Great main characters, great interaction, loved the story, it's just great.

you know, it's not actually a time issue. when i do have time, it's a matter of not knowing what to read because there's so many i want to get to and wondering if i'm making the best use of my time at that moment by reading the best possible thing for me at that time. it's completely irrational trying to tie notions of efficiency to something like this and i'm going to end up reading them all anyway but it still ends up happening. i'm always on the lookout for something that will blow me away (my 10/10s that i keep making topics about) and i spend so much time thinking, "is this the 10?" and "do i start this?" i mean just two days ago, i spent about 10 minutes standing just looking at my bookshelf trying to decide.

i'll take this moment to ask everyone about their reading habits though. when i have the time i read either in the morning a little bit after i wake up or at night before going to sleep. usually ends up being the night option. as for amount of time, anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours, dependent on how into the book i am, how much time i can spare, what mood i'm in. usually reading multiple books at once.

Waiting on Amazon to refresh their Kindle lineup so I can upgrade my Paperwhite. I've no real reason too, I just love my Paperwhite so much and get more use out of it than any other electronic device I've ever owned, so I figured I'd get one of the pricier and nicer models.

Lately, I've been reading ... more legal thrillers. It's something I guess I don't have in common with anybody else on this board (to my knowledge?) but I like legal thrillers a whole lot and find myself reading them even though the target demographic is like ... 40-60 year-old men and women. I've recently started reading John Lescroart's novels and there's like 20 of them to keep me occupied.

Hopefully I can break free soon though, because I have a new Powder Mage trilogy from Brian McClellan to start, as Sins of Empire came out this month. And then, next month, there's the new Jeff Vandermeer.

I started reading Dresden Files earlier this year and loved every second of the books ... except for one character, who was so horrible as a character that I actually got angry and dropped my Kindle. Needless to say, I stopped reading that series. I have been told that character stops being terrible and the books get better (and that maybe Harry stops being so weirdly sexist that it doesn't feel like a character trait, but more an author trait??) but I dunno, after getting that kind of reaction to me under normal circumstances I wouldn't continue reading, so idk.

The way it works for me is I go into a legal thriller hole, read nothing but those for a few months, then break free and there's a whole world of fantasy and sci-fi and what not waiting for me. Hoping to break free again soon ... before a new Grisham or Connelly pulls me in come June/July.

I do this too (except at my computer because I mostly read e-books) because I have a backlog as long as my arm and I'm an indecisive person.

then I grab something on a whim -- not even necessarily something high on the backlog, just whatever strikes me at the moment -- and read for hours. most books I finish within a day or two, sometimes in a single sitting.

then maybe a week or two goes by where I add more books to the backlog without reading any of them.

Murphy. I didn't appreciate the character development from the first book being completely undone for no reason and with no explanation, and she is completely insufferable in book 2. i don't even mind assholes if they are believable assholes and she just isn't. she was terrible and nothing about her was even remotely interesting. them even creating the potential for her to shoot harry (even if that's not ultimately what happened) being a plausible thing based on her actions to that point just frustrated me so much i gave up on it and haven't went back.

i'm told she gets better in literally the next book but idk if it's worth it

I think something that happens with procrastination is... you tend to kick something down the line, but the issue is that you have to make an effort when 'down the line' arrives.

When I add a book to my 'to-read' list, I just put it on hold right away at the library. When the time comes, I have no choice but to go and pick the book up and read it within the allotted time. I don't build a giant collection of books where I have options. Computational kindness - when you restrict your choices, you reduce analysis paralysis and wind up getting more done.

Don't expect that you'll change your habits because of this, but it has been working for me. I save money and the library qualifies as a sort of 'third place' for me.

Yeah space is honestly the big reason I'm trying to use it more. Although I really like the feel of a good paperback so it's a pretty difficult transition.

It also fits pretty nicely with everything I carry around with me. Most of the books I like to read are super clunky

The Last Hero, the 27th Discworld book, finished. In this one-of-a-kind illustrated Discworld book, Genghiz Cohen has left his throne at the Agatean Empire to do one last heroic act along with his Silver Horde: returning the fire to the gods. Everyone knows the story of the first hero who stole fire to give to mankind. Except Cohen plans to carry a gigantic bomb and destroy the home of the gods, which will result in the collapse of the magical field of Discworld for 2 weeks. Oh, and the entire discworld will be destroyed in a few seconds. Thus Lord Vetinari tasks 3 of the fi- err, the brave- oh dear. Well at any rate, Leonard of Quirm the genius inventor, Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson of the City Watch, and the Wizard (Great Wizzard) Rincewind are sent on a quest to save the world from it's last hero of Discworld

Best Parts:
- OH MY GOD THE ILLUSTRATIONS! Paul Kidby does a fantastic job portraying everybody! My favorite piece is the worst case scenario if Cohen isn't stopped with the red barren Discworld and skeletal Elephants and A'Tuin. And of course Death looks ****ing sharp and stylish.
- LMAO Death is confused with the uncertainty principle and the Schroedinger's Cat Thought Experiment. D'aww he's a softie with cats though.
- Rincewind barging into the room to refuse to volunteer is just amazing
- Leonard's ignorance of the violent nature of man is ****ing hilarious. Those notes of his lol
- The imaginary Hull borer complete with notes of MUST SPLIT UP XD
- The sheer sense of awe as everybody, even Rincewind, is affected at seeing the Elephants of the Discworld. Both times.
- Moon Dragons. They say that Errol is a throwback to these guys... but I like to think that these guys are part of Errol's brood. It's a nice thought anyway.
- Cohen BEATING Fate and figuratively spitting on The Lady's favor! Now THAT'S a hero that's fighting the gods. His plan to kill off the gods would actually have worked too... if not for the fact that it would destroy the world before killing the gods.
- Carrot standing up to Cohen and the Silver Horde... with the latter hesitating because this time, Carrot IS the hero. I was so damn hyped by this point man.
- I kept laughing and repeating the bit where Rincewind and the Librarian ask the gods for boons. DOUBLE BALLOONS!
- Cohen and the Silver Horde horsejacking the valkyries and going off to adventure forever to other worlds... yet we're still not sure whether they're really dead or not. Damn you uncertainty principle! Damn good chaps they are for rescuing Mazda though.
- That last shot of the Bard as he finishes singing the Saga man. You'll live forever Cohen.
- XD Leonard finished the assignment. Also lol the Frying Pan is still sticking to Rincewind.

I love this book man. The illustrations are the star of the show, and as Rincewind's last hurrah and a crossover book it's pretty damn great. Rather short though, but it said all there needs to be said. I like this book so much that after finish hearing it in a day I looked up my hardcopy and see all the illustrations again

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, the 28th Discworld book, finished. Everybody knows about the Rat Piper, and Maurice the cat knows how to take advantage of it along with Keith the stupid looking kid who can play penny whistle (that certainly didn't cost a penny) and a clan of rats (who are getting too smart and too dumb for Maurice's liking). They traveled from town to town pulling off the plan... and then they went to their final target before calling it quits, the town of Bad Blintz in Uberwald. But deep underground, the rats can feel something is wrong. And the rats learned a new word that day: Evil.

Best Parts:
- Mr Bunnsy Has An Adventure
- I love the character of Maurice. Smart guy who who is tormented by his past deeds
- The coach robbery scene was an excellent introduction to the gang
- Oh my god Malicia is so adorably annoying. She takes thinking in stories to absurd levels I can't help but love her. That scene where she purposely tries to accidentally find the secret passage man. How can you not like her?
- Maurice constantly reassuring everyone that he always asked rats and mice if they can speak before eating him... and then the reason revealed itself. Throughout the book we're constantly reminded of the fact that the rats got smart because they ate trash from the Unseen University's dump, and Maurice said he never ate trash. Logically, he must have ate a talking rat then. Poor Maurice
- Spider, the Rat King of Bad Blintz. Creepy as **** and ambitious as hell, the hive mind is a great villain
- Dangerous Beans standing up to Spider and, despite widdling himself in terror, survived the onslaught of psychic attack. And this is after he lost faith in Rats.
- Maurice saving the day as both Cat and Maurice, with his feral self ignoring Spider's attacks and Maurice directing all the fury to Spider's weakness, his knot of tails.
- Maurice's death scene. Loved his about face when he came face to skull with Death and the negotiations
- The Town Meeting man. Amazing. Loved how it ended with Darktan and the Mayor finding common ground
- Loved how vulnerable Malicia is at the end and Keith being VERY ambitious
- The ending with the town's aftermath and Maurice continuing being Maurice hit all the right notes with me

The first entry in the Discworld children's novel, and I liked it. A bit short though, but Maurice, Malicia, and Spider carried the book. But not far enough, lacking a certain oomph

Night Watch, the 29th Discworld book, finished. Commander Samuel Vimes is expecting a baby back home when he got a tip that a notorious criminal, Carcer Dun, killed an officer. When the Watch cornered Carcer at the rooftop of the Unseen University, Vimes and Carcer are caught up in the aftermath of the events of Thief of Time and are sent flung back into the past of Ankh Morpork. These are the days of the Patrician lord Winder, who is crazy paranoid and enacted a curfew law in the city. Vimes recognized that these are the last few days before the rebellion begins and the city goes to hell, and he needs to return to the future with Carcer. Just one problem: John Keel, Vimes' superior and role model throughout his early days in the Night Watch, was killed by Carcer. With no other choice, Vimes impersonates John Keel and becomes a Sergeant in the Night Watch. Two problems now though. One, a young Sam Vimes is also there. Two: John Keel never made it out alive from the riots...

Best part:
- I only JUST realized that Night Watch happened at the exact same time (well not really but you know what I mean) as Thief of Time. Cool.
- Vimes slowly realizing that he's in the past and the really sad scene where he invaded the Ramkin home and Sybil pulled a sword on him :(
- LU TZE'S HERE YAY!
- Amazing how Vimes dealt with the mob outside of Watch's building. Nobody died. Well except for the assassin.
- Oh god the scene where Vimes lost his purpose, not knowing where the Law is. It's ****ing hearbreaking. AND THEN THE MONKS CAME IN AND SAVED THE DAY! Hell yeah that lighter!
- I really really love what Vimes did during the barricade days of the civil war. And then Fred ****ed it up XD
- When Vimes and young Vimes went to the Unmentionables' Headquarters. It's just... holy crap man. The dark side of humanity. Geez.
- Holy crap Vimes took down a Big Mary
- I LOVE young Vetinari. Especially when he inhumed Lord Winder... technically. Heart attack from seeing him get too close still counts
- The riot winding down and the city returning to normal... too bad Winder's replacement, Mad Lord Snapcase decided NOT to forgive John Keel and sent Carcer after him.
- Reg Shoe the ****ING HERO! Too bad he died, but he'll be back
- Vimes' return, from saying goodbye to John Keel to saving the life of his wife and child, all while being buck naked and with the help of Ridcully (hell yeah)
- The final confrontation with Cancer in the graveyard. The Beast and the Copper working together to finally bring him to justice is a thing of beauty man.
- Vimes and Vetinari's final conversation as they head out of the graveyard. I would have LOVED to have seen Vetinari in action fighting side by side with Vimes, but secondhand account is good too. I kinda dislike how it just ended afterwards, but still.

This isn't a Night Watch book per se, it's more of a Sam Vimes book much like the Fifth Elephant. And my god I LOVED IT! I don't know why when I read it I didn't like it as much as I did now, maybe it was listening instead of reading it, but now it shot up way up the list. People frequently call it the darkest of the Discworld book, and indeed, it's a really rough chapter in Vimes's life and revealed a dark history of Ankh Morpork. It had kind of a slow start, and the ending was kind of abrupt a bit, but as the city descends into madness the book REALLY gets going and doesn't stop.

Considering that I'm gonna re-read it again, I'm glad Night Watch still holds up today.
Not reading the spoilers, though since I want to remember throughout the book.
The final showdown with Carcer and Vimes is awesome as hell, though.

"There can only be whin t'oosand!"

The Wee Free Men, the 30th Discworld Book. The second Children/Young Adult's book of the Discworld series, and the first of the Tiffany Aching books. Tiffany Aching is the sixth child of a Shepherding family from the Chalk. Her everyday life was interrupted when she encountered the Nac Mac Feegle, tiny blue pictsies. Tiny, angry pictsies. But they're just the prelude as more bizarre creatures appear in the Chalk, until it leads to a tragedy as her brother Wentworth was kidnapped and stolen away to the land where dreams come true. ALL dreams. It's up to Tiffany as the new Kedler of the Nac Mac Feegle to lead them into the snowy lands beyond Discworld on a rescue mission, against an old enemy of the witches...

Best part:
- In just a few pages, Tiffany beat up a Kappa. Admittedly Tiffany had the gall to use her own damn brother
- I really love the narrative structure here, with a lot of flashback to flesh out Tiffany's background.
- LMAO Miss Tick. I love it when these Witches are dumb at a few things.
- I really like Tiffany's lesson with Ms. Tick.
- HEADLESS HORSEMAN!
- The entire sequence in the Elf place is just.. amazing man. From discovering how it was found to the Dromes to the Queen to the escape to the final confrontation... wow. That it's so long and takes up quite a chunk of the book speaks volumes.
- Geez the Queen of the elves are back and boy does she mean business. We only got a taste of her powers in the Lords and Ladies book, but here we see her in all her glory... and also at her worst. I wonder what happened to make the King give up on her though.
- Holy crap there's baby stealing in this book! Kinda sorta disagree with the conclusion but eh, better that everyone learns to prevent it in the future.
- Dat depths of despair after everybody seems to be dead (well other than Roland) :(
- XD the toad turning out to be a lawyer and beating ALL the lawyers the Queen made up.
- OH MY GOD IT'S THE WITCHES! Even Granny Weatherwax respects Tiffany Aching!
- I like the slow ending, with everything returning to normal. Well, at least to the new status quo. Yeah you show that Roland what for!

This is the first time I've ever... err... consumed this book. I cant find ANY of these books in Indonesia. Which is weird because I found The Amazing Maurice rather easily. And I really liked it! Lots of dark, dark moments, and Tiffany is giving Granny Weatherwax and Susan a run for their money for favorite female protagonist. I have to say though... the wee free men bits are a bit hard to understand, so knocked it down a bit. Looking forward to the other entry to this series in any case.
