Since the last K-Pop General was made several K-Pop group of various have since disbanded. 4minute, Rainbow, 2NE1, SPICA and others have all decided to call it quits for one reason or another. I wish all the members of those groups the best in their future careers. However, there is one K-Pop group whose disbandment carries just a little more impact than the others and that's Wonder Girls, the founders of modern K-pop.

Wonder Girls debuted with their original line-up of Sunye, Yeeun, Sunmi, Sohee, and Hyuna back in early 2007 with the song Irony. Hyuna left the group not too long after and was replaced by Yubin, creating the classic Wonder Girls line-up. Their next song Tell Me was a smash hit and cultural phenomenon. They basically pioneered the hook song for k-pop and in doing so revived girl group k-pop in the national spotlight. In addition, as the first girl group of the Youtube era, Tell Me and its simple but iconic point dance started inspiring dance covers all around the world. While we were still a ways from the Hallyu wave at its peak, k-pop was now global.

Tell Me was followed up by So Hot and Nobody, both of which were wildly successful and started netted Wonder Girls their fair share of awards. By the end of 2008, the were the undisputed k-pop champs, but that's when things took a turn. JYP wanted to focus on international promotions, it started with a typical tour through Asia, but it turned into them opening for the Jonas Brothers on their tour. By the beginning of 2010 Sunmi had dropped out of the group and she was replaced by Hyelim and when Wonder Girls came back to Korea they were facing a very different kpop market with literally 50 times the competition.

Their next few releases, Two Different Tears, Be My Baby, and Like This did decent enough. They had lost their dominance during their absence but they were still notable. However the hiatus times were getting bigger and bigger and eventually news came out that Sunye was getting married. Sohee, the most popular member, left shortly after. By the end of 2014, Wonder Girls had lost their main vocalists, their most popular member and hadn't released anything as a group in 2 years. If they disbanded then, no one would have been surprised.

But that didn't happen. Sunmi returned to the group and in the summer of 2015, they released appropriately named album, Reboot, with their title track (and best song of the year IMO) "I Feel You". The song did well. It was nothing like anything Wonder Girls had done before and it really gave off the sense that the group was back. The next year they followed it up with the even more successful "Why So Lonely" and at this point it really felt like we were getting a new and improved Wonder Girls 2.0. For the first time in years I wasn't worried about Wonder Girls disbanding. And that's what makes the disbandment just hurt even more, but honestly I get it. For several of the women in the group, it has been ten years of their life and they likely just wanted to do something different, regardless of their newfound success.

Wonder Girls were pioneers in kpop and their influence is still readily apparent today. They might be disbanded but the members are all probably going to embark on solo adventures before long and they are all on good terms with each other. So reunions in the future are definitely possible. Thanks for the memories Wonder Girls.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy how the T-ara scandal has been given new life and we have insight into what really happen.

But I'm not even mad though. Honestly, it was a blessing in disguise for T-ara, because now they've become rich (in China) and they've outlasted every other group that debuted in 2009. Even Hyomin and Jiyeon are still making solos.

I wasn't as much of a fan of WG as say IOI, and yet I feel just as sad that they're disbanding. The power of nostalgia! SNSD were already the clear top group when I got into Kpop but WG were always there and they never completely lost that mystique that they would rise and challenge them again. Of course yeah a lot of stuff was going on as well.

Last thread lasted almost half a year! I guess it's kind of a quiet time for Kpop, with a lot of groups dissolving, but there's also a lot of new groups on the scene now and more coming, so I think there's also a lot to look forward to. Anyways, couple things I wanted to comment on from the last thread.

Running Man: Member's Weeks have been going pretty well. I had just been thinking that Gary's absence was really starting to show when he came on the superpowers episode. So that was a nice surprise, I hope he gets to be a frequent guest. I'm glad they solved the controversy. They have a few more years to go for sure if they do the show right and I think this is a good chance to take an honest look at it and make it great again.

Gymnastics: Obviously the best event in ISAC last year, so I'm happy they brought it back. Cheng Xiao was a demon with that hoop but, unfortunately...

Bonus Yeonjae love for the fans! <3

Lots more on the related vids and all over the internets, in case you want to just watch her forever.

Red Velvet: My favorite group is one dimension higher than your favorite group.

http://www.asianjunkie.com/2017/02/04/comment-of-the-day-red-velvet-stan-goes-on-the-goat-delulu-stan-rant/

See, that's the beauty of being an RV fan, you don't have to go on a huge fanboy rant because someone already did! So there's no need for me to harp on how their songs are the best, their performance is the best and most importantly they have the most charm and charisma. Okay fine I guess the last one is subjective.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjbA8N_IiaU

Make sure you wear the glasses when you watch them!

Seriously, I also liked Rookie on first listen and I think I like it better than RR. For me it's

Be Natural > Dumb Dumb > Automatic > Happiness > Rookie > Russian Roulette > Ice Cream Cake > One of These Nights

Lists are fun! We don't need any of this "discussion", guys, let's just do lists. Here's one I'm curious about.

TT >> Ooh Ahh >= Cheer Up

Like TT's actually a good song. What do you guys think.

Oh and by the way just for the record I swear she looked 18 under her skirt, Your Honor.

Some time after back then it did come out that Hwayoung was a shady little girl. So people did take a step back. But even by then the damage had already been done. That's why the most important lesson that came out of the scandal is that you should never ever side with knetz and be swept up in their hateful rages. If people are dumb sheep then knetz are rabid psycho dumb sheep. They are always wrong.

I just looked it up, I didn't really see much. Seems like her sister that wasn't even in the group was the real problem. Hwayoung herself sounds like a bit of a drama queen though. In fairness IIRC her statement after leaving the group did say something along the lines of the whole thing getting blown out of proportion, but that's not exactly a "they didn't bully me everyone, I'm just not cut out for this industry" statement she should have made.

Or maybe she really thought they were bullying her because they were reprimanding her dumbass all the time because she wouldn't make the sacrifice they were all making.

No yeah she's really something. Like way back then she could have said something, T-ara got damaged hard and fast, but even just a little comment would have helped them. Yeah she didn't accuse them or anything, I mean that would have just been criminal, but "it was blown out of proportion" or yeah whatever she said then is pretty vague considering... For a long time they were completely demonized if you remember, if you believed everything you'd think they were these really mean ******* who delighted in torturing this poor girl. Back then I thought the truth was somewhere in the middle, like the most serious piece of evidence, really the only evidence were the text messages. And they showed there was some friction between them, obviously. But even I'm embarrassed now, I mean T-ara did nothing, they really did absolutely nothing wrong, like wow just a witch hunt completely fueled on lies and hatred, but the gall of her, and what about the sister, you know leave alone confess that you actually threatened poor Ahreum (who's now actually getting hatred for standing up and speaking like you know she said she was going to disfigure me, again gotta love knetz!), but just say T-ara never bullied me or anything like that, I was wrong back then, I'm sorry, be honest! But to keep up the pretense wtf playing a victim... just a little piece of work and it finally caught up to them. It is pretty crazy.

Sorry ranting again. But you know what else it makes you wonder again, people have mentioned, what's the real story behind Jessica and SNSD. Like there might be nothing but... there's some weird stuff there, too. No comparison though, what happened to T-ara is just... wow.

Pretty impressive to me. I ended with 34. There were also four more that I knew the group, but couldn't think of the name of the song (3, 7, 36, 49), and four more that I legit should have gotten if I heard a different part of the song or I hadn't just blanked (6, 16, 30, 32).

My excuse is that I've only been into kpop for two years or so >_>

These are the ones I missed (SPOILERS CONTAIN ANSWERS)

3. F(x), Rum Pum Pum Pum.
6. Brown Eyed Girls, Abracadabra.
7. 2NE1, Gotta be you.
8. Girls day, Female president.
10. Apink, NoNoNo.
16. Kara, Cupid.
22. S.E.S, I'm your girl.
24. 9muses, Wild.
25. Afterschool, Flashback.
30. CLC, Hobgoblin.
32. Miss A, Only u.
36. Cosmic girls, secret.
39. Girl's day, expect.
42. Ladie's code, Kiss kiss.
45. Gfriend, Rough.
49. DIA, Mr. Potter.

Not too bad. Not like I missed my favorite songs or anything.

Yeah, I got CLC because I had just been watching them yesterday lol. Well I knew that's what they were putting out.

My excuse is that I've only been into kpop for two years or so >_>

Oh okay, I was just going to ask. Only two years, could have sworn you'd been around for at least four? Well, that's pretty good then!

It's not impressive, it's just more time wasted on this. :) It's over 6 years now that I've been following kpop. Somewhat impressive might be if I knew all their names which is what I thought I should go for, and I did okay but there's still some groups I don't know that well. Plus nobody, nobody knows every 9muses member, that's just no.

Yeah I guess a lot has accumulated over the years. It was already a lot to follow as it happened. One thing to do is I watched a lot of variety. Not just kpop but you learn quite a bit about Korea and the culture, specially popular culture because naturally they're always referencing what's popular. Something funny is that if I go back to watch those programs I now get a lot of the jokes and references they did that one just finds goofy the first time around but I didn't really understand until after a lot of exposure. It's really cool when you start recognizing stuff they do or talk about, like a lot of the dumb gags they love, but so many songs that are popular also, and more so now that more time has passed and a lot of them have already become old themselves, it's weird.

I thought maybe you should have got some songs that are pretty recent, like DIA or Gfriend, even WJSN, although I realize a lot of it is how much you can be bothered, really. And again so much stuff, I realize now it might seem daunting. But there's also a lot of good stuff you're missing, a lot of good stuff that you just missed from a few years back.

After School went through a lot of phases and it's pretty much all good. I don't remember why it was mentioned a while ago, I think Rob mentioned Dressing Room, I remember Gheb mentioned Diva. First Love is one of my favorite songs. And of course it doesn't hurt that Pledis girls are hot af.

Also f(x), that's pretty decent music, if you haven't listened to RPPP's album, "Pink Tape". They just did a lot of experimental stuff (I mean, relatively speaking...) with f(x) and it starts with that album, like RV and everything really is so generic compared to f(x).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFvsLW3iOqg

I love that they did that song.

It's understandable that you wouldn't know Girl's Day since they were practically silent last year. All that bastardized, middle-child generation, f(x), Rainbow, miss A... groups that were always under the shadow of their seniors and never really got a good chance unless they survived until now, then maybe. Also why you have to fully know Apink. That new gen aesthetic that has infested everything now, and again it's Apink who became the godmothers of this. I mean it's one of the currents of the genre but a lot of details really... first blossom with Apink.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb5RrJZNf7E

A lot of stuff... Ladies Code. Ladies Code is the only group that would have challenged RV. And that's the only time I feel comfortable talking about them.

A lot has changed, it's pretty obvious now but kpop is really going through a big shift. But it's all a cycle.

I appreciate your post, but I've dug through a LOT of kpop. By that I mean I've gone through most or all albums of almost every group (and a bunch of solo artists) I can think of and picked out the songs I liked. There's honestly a good chance I've heard the songs I missed, I just couldn't remember them. A lot of it just comes down to songs I like and hear all the time. As an example, some of my favorite songs are from f(x), but Rum Pum Pum Pum is one of my least favorite of their popular songs so I hadn't heard it in a long time. I don't really like Apink or most of GFriend's songs tbh, and I certainly have biases toward certain groups. That's probably a reason for some of the ones I missed. And like I said, some of them I just blanked, like Hobgoblin which I just posted or commented on in the last topic.

I can go into specifics on anything else if you want. I'm happy to discuss any groups I know or should know. I think this is the fourth or fifth kpop topic I've been a part of if that gives you any timeframe.

I have wanted to get into some of the variety shows or whatever. I feel like it's something I should set aside time for that I just haven't done. One of these days I'm sure I will. I did watch the full episode of Weekly Idol with BlackPink so I guess that's a start.

Oh okay, that's cool. Kinda different from the way I approach it I guess, because I'm mostly interested in watching them perform. So I kinda do the opposite you do lol, After listening to an album even though there's a lot of songs I will like I will forget most of them, unless I listen to them again which does happen but not as often. So there you go! You do know a lot of songs, but it wouldn't show on a little internet quiz like this.

Slightly better, but I feel like they still have that Apink feel to them. They just aren't really catchy to me. I also prefer more upbeat songs in general, but there are plenty of exceptions.

What do you mean by missions? PD101 didn't really have missions, like stuff that's not even related to performing. Although maybe you could say the same for the ranking... In that sense yes it's mostly a straight up competition but they do it different ways. I mostly skipped to the parts with my favorites, I'm no singing expert and maybe I'm just biased but I think Seunghee is really the best, she gets praise and she deserves it. I mean the girls are all good singers, but only some of them on top of having a good voice actually make me want to listen to them. I like Uji's voice and Sojung's voice. I do think Soyeon is underrated. I think Jinsol just needs some experience, she's still learning, developing her voice.

Oooh I just watched RM! I hadn't even been keeping track of who was coming on the show, otherwise I would have watched it much sooner! All of a sudden they start playing RR they're like oh it's RV I'm like yeah right no way hahaha XD It was a pretty good episode even without them, too.

My reaction: Taeyeon is trying to become BoA.

I love it. I think this is more her style, not that those ballads aren't great but I just like seeing her doing different stuff.

Yeah it's really good. Twice has honestly been blowing me away since Page Two. Nearly every song is great, single or not.

I liked The Story Begins too, but it didn't totally sell me on them at the time.

Such a shame JYP artists aren't on Spotify. Literally the only reason I'm still on it is because it's part of my phone plan (for the next year or so). Once it's done, may have to consider switching to something else.

Do you get Melon in the States?

I use it here and it's so cheap... Get every song, video and more from the Korean charts

Not sure if Melon is available in NA (am personally in Canada). Apple Music seems to have the larger library, but I'm holding off on making any switch due to my phone plan. Unless I change it sooner, I'll be sticking with Spotify for another year.

7 million views in one day, wtf.

And as much as I LOVE Twice, I don't like any of their songs. It's weird.

Okay in the beginning I was like this is just too easy but I got 48 :\ Should have known, I'm sorry but I don't even know all of 2ne1's songs and 9muses whut... I don't pay attention to the title of their songs!

Did you guys get them all? Shouldn't be too hard I guess.

I finally got around to doing this. I got everything but the SES song.

Running Man: Member's Weeks have been going pretty well. I had just been thinking that Gary's absence was really starting to show when he came on the superpowers episode. So that was a nice surprise, I hope he gets to be a frequent guest. 'm glad they solved the controversy. They have a few more years to go for sure if they do the show right and I think this is a good chance to take an honest look at it and make it great again.

I've been behind on episodes for awhile, the only members week I had watched was Ji Hyo's, but the last couple of days I've caught up. I have to agree, the members weeks are very good and have been really entertaining. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going after it ends. I didn't think Ji Hyo's week was very good, KJK's was ok, but the rest have been great. Can't wait to see what kind of crazy **** Kwangsoo is going to do for his.

Yeah lol, expectation is high! XD I think sometimes staff overthinks it too much, trying to be too different/innovative, when it's true if you have something that worked, don't be shy and just do it several times, just keep the ball rolling like that.

None of them? Geez man. XD Yeah they have a certain style I guess. I have to admit Knock Knock is once again good enough that I just have to keep listening to it, grumble. They're just getting bigger and bigger. Actually visually I think they're looking better than ever. Musically I still like TT best though.

Also what's up with this, lol?

TT and Ooh-Ahh are alright. I'd say Red Velvet and Oh My Girl have the best songs among the newer girl groups.

New song from Kard is really good. I can't believe that's Puretty/April's Somin. She's only 20 and this is her third group, but it looks like it's the most successful one yet.

Oh yeah! I don't know why they don't just let them perform, it's pretty good.

April isn't un-successful, though... I mean compared to the new groups they're holding their own well, specially considering all the changes they've been through. I fear people dismiss them like they failed to live up to some expectation... It's just hard with so much competition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7bol3hpThc

I think going back up to 6 members was good, something about it, seems like they were really meant for this mid-large setup since the beginning. I mean I thought they were fine with 5 but it makes them look better somehow, just a larger presence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33-vW0xiN5E

I love them whatever they do, but yeah to get the fans and the wins other groups will beat them if honestly musically their songs are more interesting/original, yeah like OMG for example. I think they should try leading with their stronger side, even if it's a little messy, otherwise they aren't going to stand out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRSJOAkWjfA

I know, yeah this is "strong" lol. April Story did well, though.

I'm really bad at ranking things, but I decided to make a playlist of my best estimate of my 304 favorite kpop songs. It was gonna be smaller, but I couldn't figure out where to draw the line so I kept going. This is mostly for me, but feel free to look through it if you're interested or ignore it or whatever.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLswoWoI7w17TYepqEYejBDXkAO4QRF6aa

There is about a 20% chance I keep this updated for any extended period of time.
