Game of the generation? Are you guys insane? MGS4 wrapped that up years ago.

You let the Patriots implant you? Are you insane?

We got a sleeper agent and some indoctrinated dude all up in here.

MGS4 is amazing and a 9.3 or so. But I like the Mass Effect series even more than MGS, I think. Or at least it's about tied because MGS3 is just unstoppable.

MGS3 happened to be released last gen, though.

MGS4 is closer to a 7-8 for me. Not really in my 'game of the generation' discussion group. Then again, ME2 and ME3 aren't either!

Lol B8, a place that has guys who praised a game like Tales of Symphonia for years. Still don't understand that one.

ME3 is tremendous, top ten of this generation, sure. But #1? Not even close.

Anybody who thinks MGS4 isn't the best game of the current generation clearly doesn't have legitimate appreciation for the MGS franchise.

Since we've got all manner of gaming discussion going on here, I'm wondering: does the Elder Scrolls (specifically Oblivion and Skyrim) have more in common with Zelda than it does with Final Fantasy? I find it interesting that a series so different from the popular jRPGs of the 1990s-early 2000s can take their place as the quintessential RPG series of the day. As far as I know it, The Elder Scrolls does not feature parties, turn-based combat, or plots that are even that character-driven (no Elder Scrolls character has even made a contest). If the series shares a lot of Zelda elements, however, that would help explain it.

A lot of it has to do with a prevailing sense of staleness from JRPGs which are increasingly viewed as limiting in a gaming world in which the majority want to be able to go where they want to go, do what they want to do, and they're more than willing to sacrifice linear plot cohesion for the opportunity to smack someone instead of automatically agreeing to their demands. In that sense I'd say TES has more in common with Zelda than Final Fantasy, for sure, but not to the point that they're all that similar. Zelda still has more plot guidance involved.

Some spoilers from ME3 and FFX here:

So I'm reading up on the Catalyst, and he explains (apparently) that the first Reaper was created by an organic race that was getting absolutely decimated by a synthetic race, and this was essentially a last resort to preserve themselves in another alternate form, subscribing to a dogmatic approach that "all synthetic life will destroy organic life" and operate solely on this basis for justifying their actions.

So.

The Reapers are essentially Sin?

Haven't posted in this for a while but I'm gonna throw in my favorite series of this gen.

Mass Effect
Assassin's Creed
Batman: Arkham whatever
Dead Space

Those are the top four easily. I also loved Bayonetta, RDR, The Darkness, Darksiders, Borderlands, Dark Souls, and less popular stuff like Mirror's Edge.

I didn't have a PS3 until recently so there's not many PS3 games I've played. I played UC1 and started UC2 but never finished it. I just can't get into those games. I think it's partially because they didn't live up to all the hype surrounding them when I finally played them. They're great games but nowhere near the greatest series of this generation.

Also, Tali >>>>> Liara. I find Liara to be at her best when she's interacting with the other people. Like on Javik's mission if you take Garrus or when Joker is bugging her about her head tentacle things.

Heh, that new sequence where your squadmates get picked up is pretty great, but it was really weird for me. You see, I chose to bring Garrus and Javik with me. Garrus because he's the ultimate bro, and Javik because of his undying vengeance against the Reapers. I was aware of how that dialogue sequence generally goes no matter what, with obvious alterations depending on who the characters are and if you're romantically linked to them.

Well, I was hoping at the very least that it'd be Garrus that's injured and refuses to leave, but it winds up being Javik. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, of course, but when my Paragon Shepard told him, "someone has to survive this!" it rang really weirdly to me, considering Javik had only an hour prior heavily insinuated to my Shepard that he'd off himself to go to his fellow Protheans in the great beyond.

Shepard, it's a lovely thought, but...
