That happened to me a couple of years ago. It doesn't get me like Xenogears does, but man, second best game ever and all.

It's as good as people say it is, and it's nowhere near as bad as people say it is.

Mixed opinions overall imo. Lots of people like it, but lots hate it as well.

Materia is up there with FFV Job System if I recall.

FFVII is a fine game that is incorrectly touted as the best ever which gets it hated on as a result.

That said, the game itself is fairly easy to break. One HP Plus on everyone (More if you feel like it, whatever), Restore+All on everyone, and Time+All with another Time is all you need basically the entire game once you have access to them, barring the optional bosses.

Almost every boss is vulnerable to Slow, so on turn one you can make yourself 4x faster than most of them and rip them to shreds. The only notable exception to this rule is Carry Armor, which is the first time HP Plus comes in really handy.

Materia is excellent. I'm not usually a fan of characters being quite that malleable but the Materia system rocks.

I agree with the gist of that first statement you made -- such things tend to backfire tremendously -- but it's all relative and personal, of course, and for me, personally, it really is one of the best games ever... rather easily, at that.

As for breaking the game, quite so, but apart from a few of the earlier titles and a couple of the more recent ones, the FF series as a whole is very easy, so it doesn't get to me. That said, I cannot deny that had I played the game for the first time in 2012, or even 2002, I would have likely been harsher on such things.

And I wasn't even including big guard, a disgustingly overpowered enemy skill. (You'll need to manipulate a certain monster to get it).

This thing gives the entire party haste, barrier, and m. barrier, and is completely spammable if you feel like it. It was so broken I refuse to even use it.

Blue Magic (Enemy Skill) has always been kind of OP, but yeah, nowhere has it been more ridiculous than in FFVII with Big Guard.

I really didn't care for the story at all, but I did like the Materia system okay. On the one hand yeah it's kinda lame that the only real difference between characters is their limit breaks and the Materia slots on their weapons, but on the other hand it's kinda cool that anyone can do anything because then you can just pick whatever characters you actually like. You don't have to take someone you hate just because they're useful. One problem I had though, and maybe I was just doing something wrong, but I thought it took way too long to get Materia leveled up and whatnot. Like I could come up with a bunch of cool Materia setups but actually getting all the Materia I needed to do it just took a bazillion years.

Man, I love the f*** outta the story. To each their own, but it's easily my second favorite plot in an RPG. Heavyhanded as it is, I absolutely adore the game's quasi-environmental message.

Cloud is probably my all-time favorite protagonist, and I love the FFVII story and lore.

It's got it's translation issues, but overall it's one of the best stories in gaming.

Yep! Although I'm somewhat of a rarity among FFVII fans in that I don't really care to add basically anything from the Compilation into the universe in my head, including Advent Children Complete and even Crisis Core. (Which is still a decent enough game and worth playing, mind you, but nothing spectacular, sorry.)

Love vanilla FFVII's universe. Not a big fan of it after that!

Well, my top 100 games are 65-70% RPGs, so "or even the greatest RPG" doesn't really apply to me, personally. I'm guessin' you've got a more diverse gaming palette than me!

I don't think I have a top 100 games yet. Never bothered to really think about it. Almost all of my favorite games are RPGs though. Top 5 is definitely all RPGs at the very least, probably top 10-15 too.

It's actually a relatively recent thing for me, mainly because I've exposed myself/been exposed to so many games in the past couple of years.

Two thirds of my list is still from pre-2001, though. Ah well, heh.

I have only played a couple pre-2001 RPGs as far as I know. 4 of my top 5 are from the PS2 era and one from the current gen so far.
