Absolutely worth buying. It's a fantastic game with an amazing cast and arguably the best JRPG protagonist of all time.

How long is it? Also, how long before things start up? I don't want to play 10 hours before anything happens.

I don't know how long it is. I usually spend 2-3 times longer on JRPGs than the average person so uh maybe around 40 hours?

I'm playing through it right now. It's pretty good.

I haven't managed to get this into a JRPG in quite a long time so that says something.

I'd say about 50-60 hours on average.

I think it took me about 70 hours, but I was going pretty slow.

And 40 hours is like the length of Symphonia, the game's definitely longer than that.

I just took an estimate since I'm pretty sure my first Vesperia playthrough was 120 hours. I'm 105~ on Graces f and I haven't even beaten the final boss or post game arc thing yet.

Yeah, it takes about 50-55 hours for a first playthrough but you need three playthroughs to get all of the achievements (if you're that kind of person) and those will take 150 hours collectively (the second is a full playthrough where you get everything, the third is a speed run). If you have any further questions, I still have my files on Vesperia from which I wrote the board sticky topic.

Also, how long before things start up? I don't want to play 10 hours before anything happens.

If you're asking this, then, um... I'm not sure if you'll like Vesperia. Things start up right away, but... the characters, although awesome, are criminally underdeveloped, and the plot is practically nonexistent. It's a bit more of a realistic story.

When comparing it to Symphonia, keep the following in mind:
-Symphonia has a better, although much more cliche plot - it's presented in a great fashion and moves at an appropriate pace; Vesperia's plot is a bunch of seemingly random events that are not exactly cliche, but they also don't seem cohesive - it's a more organic approach that ends up being nothing special
-Symphonia has a typical cast, whereas Vesperia has one of the most unique (and arguably the best) protagonists I've encountered, plus an awesome, although criminally underdeveloped, supporting cast
-Vesperia's battle system is built upon the same base as Symphonia's, only made to be a thousand times better. FREE RUN EXISTS!

The main thing about Symphonia that kept me going was the plot and the characters I cared about, whereas in Vesperia it was the character interactions and the battle system. If you greatly prefer an RPG that has a rich, fully developed plot, then Vesperia might not be right for you. It feels so lackluster in that department, especially when compared to Abyss. If you have a PS2 or 3DS and want an RPG with a great plot, I'd say go for Abyss instead of Vesperia. Doesn't change that Vesperia is an awesomely fun game with intriguing characters and, well... it's unique given its organic approach. I'd say it's worth a try, especially if you can get it for $30.

I have no idea what you're talking about here. I mean, I haven't played a ton of RPGs, but Vesperia is way better about this than basically every other RPG I've played. And that at least includes ToS and TotA.

On topic: 60ish hours for a first playthrough where you don't try to do every sidequest sounds about right.

Estelle is well-known for having horrible AI and requires constant babysitting and strategy modifications. Her skill set is really good, it's just that she's not very capable because the AI can't use her properly.

And I have no idea what you're talking about, either. Abyss had amazing character development. What kind of backstory did Vesperia give us? Nowhere near as much as Abyss did, that's for sure. Vesperia only developed each character's personality, and sure, a few of them grew considerably, but it didn't develop them to the same extent that Abyss did, which presented ample backstory for all the playables and showed a great amount of personal growth in three of them.

We're not going to debate about this here, though. This is to determine if the game is right for the TC.

I know you just said "we're not going to debate about this here," but you were talking to someone else, and I didn't get to put my two cents in.

For my money, I prefer Vesperia's more low-key, organic character growth. It feels much more realistic and is much, much easier to relate to. The cast, for the most part, doesn't have detailed backstories, sure. They're just people. And you get to see them grow as people in a very believable way rather than become almost different people entirely. I like Abyss, and I'm not putting it down, but I definitely prefer the way Vesperia does it.

But you're right about not debating this, here. I just wanted to share my own opinion, as people with opinions are so eager to do.

I couldn't stand the boy, Carol I think. There was a part where I was forced to use him and he was the focus when he was looking for his girlfriend or something. I stopped playing and never played it again. I almost regret it since Yuri, Repede, Boob lancer, and the other dude were amazing, but man...Carol was just so horrible.

Carol is pretty terrible, yeah. I mean in his defense, his dynamic with Yuri makes him much more bearable to me than other characters from his archetype, but it's still just a terrible archetype.
