I've mentioned it time and time again, but PRIDE did have the best heavies in the world when Fedor was in his prime. Nog, Herring, Cro Cop, Barnett, and Coleman were considered the top heavyweights in the world during the first half of the decade, and they all fought in PRIDE. Fedor beat nearly all of them (he was scheduled to fight Barnett in 2009 before Barnett failed the drug test; had he won that, he would have beaten nearly every big-name heavyweight that fought in his era). He also crushed Sylvia and Arlovski, the two guys who carried the UFC heavyweight division before it transitioned to the Lesnar era.

Of course, Fedor/Lesnar was the big fight everyone wanted to see, but knowing what we do now, how good would it have really been? Lesnar never liked getting hit and Fedor would have punched him into oblivion. The two big guys now - Velasquez and dos Santos - would have made for incredible fights and would both be big favorites over Fedor today. They're ****ing monsters and have run over everyone else in the division, so they'd probably give even prime Fedor all he could handle. But apart from those two guys - young lions who are ferocious and ten years his junior, I don't think Fedor tarnished his legacy by never fighting Lesnar or Mir. He ruled PRIDE when PRIDE was heavyweight fighting. That's the pillar of his legacy.

My one issue with Fedor was him never competing against the best during his prime. I have no doubt he would have been amazing in UFC, but I would have liked seeing it.

No, he didn't compete with the best as he came out of his prime. His prime was the ten years of absolute dominance.

He's the greatest of all time.

yes he did. his prime was from like 02 to 07, and he was absolutely facing the best mma competition during that time period. The UFC heavyweight division was an absolute joke during the same years as fedor's prime. Its pretty damn stacked now (has been for about 4 or so years). It was also a pretty good division back in the late 90s and till like 03, then tim sylvia won it and it went to **** for a division.

Most overrated fighter in MMA's young history finally hanging them up.

that would be one of the following:

Randy Couture, Frank Mir, or Chael Sonen. I'd include chuck liddell but he doesn't deserve to be put in a list with those 3.

by far the greatest heavyweight MMA fighter of all time to this point. i'm not sure if any lighter fighters have surpassed him at this point though. silva, jones, and GSP are already way up there.

anderson might have surpassed him. Jones is still a bit too young, but he has a ton of notable wins for his age and probably will surpass him when its all said and done.

GSP is starting to lose points with me (and i believe many people now) in the pound for pound rankings. The only finish he has in his 6 title defenses is a corner stoppage to bj penn. To be fair it was a pretty legit stoppage, but i promise you penn wanted to keep going as well. But ya, i cant put GSP on the same tier as fedor, anderson, or even jones at this point due to his lack of finishes

I'm not saying every win has to be a KO, TKO, or sub, but you need a lot more than what GSP has gotten since becoming a big name fighter (starting maybe around early 2006)

If Anderson Silva retires without a UFC loss, he should rightfully be the GOAT above Fedor. Fedor will always be my favorite, though. He fought like a maniac inside the ring (the same can't necessarily be said about Silva or GSP, and not just because they fight IN A CAGE HURR DURR), and outside the ring, his personality was shockingly dissimilar to what one would expect from a superstar athlete. I think that's what made me a fan more than anything. The guy was just so different.

I don't understand the question. We're talking about greatest of all time. You asked if any lighter fighters have surpassed Fedor. Nobody at LHW has, including Jones. As far as careers go, guys like Wand, Hendo and Shogun are still right there with Jones if not above him.

Silva is definitely the closest to Fedor. He's right there. Fedor just had his losses later while Andy had a couple earlier on. Andy struggled a bit and then was kicking face. Fedor came in to be sacrificed to Semmy and then proceeded to beat him down like a small child. That was breathtaking.

The fact that Jones is even in contention for his weight class, though, illustrates just how young the sport is. Even at his young age, his record is basically 17-0, and that already gives him one more career win than Tito and just four fewer than Chuck. If he beats Henderson, that'll make four consecutive title defenses, which is just one behind Tito's for most all time in the LHW division. Jones's 2011 may have been the best year any MMA fighter ever had, and honestly, that alone is enough to put him in contention.

I'll be rooting for Hendo to knock his block off, though.

true. I'll be honest, i thought the UFC was in a pretty stale period from like fall 09 to about summer 2011. The big names of previous generations were getting old and besides jones the young talent was too raw and weren't really establishing any sort of "future dominance" in any weight class. The past 6 months to a year though the big names of the mid 00s left the sport and I'm pretty impressed with some young talent too. Jones being the headline, but Pettis, Aldo, MacDonald, McDonald are all still very young and appear to be poised to have insanely long "primes"

I've got to say, though, I'm not really a fan of Fedor. I think most of that stems from his personality, which is an odd thing to say because he is certainly very respectful of all of his opponents. The only problem with that was that he was pretty much just emotionless, which made for a boring guy. Thankfully, he wasn't a boring fighter.

I can appreciate what he was able to do and he certainly was beating the top competition in the world for the time, but the sport has evolved since then and he didn't evolve with it. I think that if you look at all those other Pride guys he fought who transitioned to UFC or had still been around for a while after Pride went under, they didn't seem to have evolved with the sport either, especially Crop Cop and Big Nog. To compare guys that haven't gotten much better with the rest of the division is fair, but it's hard to argue he's the best of all time if he hasn't improved while the new competition has.

I don't think Fedor really got any worse, but his competition got better, though his loss to Antonio Silva, the slowest man on the planet boggles my mind. Honestly, I think Fedor would be able to hold his own in UFC even now, but I don't think it would be very likely that he'd wrest the belt from JDS. It's too bad he never shed all those extra lbs and moved to LHW. He'd certainly be a pretty dominant force there. I guess when you're considered the best HW in the world until a sudden 3-fight losing streak, dropping to 205 and making a run for the title only seems second best.

ill take a boring personality but amazing and fun to watch fighter over the opposite any day. To be honest i dont really care for the "you need to be amazing at your sport and some amazing personality too" that so many people seem to want in sports.

I guess i don't care much about the off the field drama as the average sports fan.

It's because ultimately sports are entertainment, and people like characters and storylines in their entertainment.

The subset of people who truly care about sports purely and in total on an athletic level is a lot smaller than you'd think.

of course its a lot smaller than most realize. But thats because sports is such a large and broad term that the people who watch sports are people not that interested. I mean how many people who watch the super bowl every year know who led the league in rushing? Or who were the top rookies for the regular season? Im sure its a very low percent.

But it's even beyond those people though.

The mere act of choosing a team to root for indicates a desire for an emotional investment beyond the athletic contests to determine which team/person is best.

Fedor's unassuming personality is precisely what endeared him to me and so many other fans, though. The fact that he'd wear socks with sandals, the fact that he double fists ice cream, the fact that he's a multimillionaire who lives in a small apartment in a no-name town and regularly wears a sweater that's twenty years out of style in Russia... it's all just too good. I also think a part of the appeal is that he is completely unaware of how unintentionally hilarious he is to his Western fans... when an interviewer actually mentioned his sweater, he gave him a look as if it was the weirdest question he had ever been asked.
