Considering I have very limited access to internet that isn't dialup over the summer while I'm working, I've been trying to get a few series on bluray and I've heard universally good things about Gungrave. Is it worth going into it blind? I'm trying to save as much of my money as I can but, but I figure $30 for a good 25~ episode anime is worth it.
Last summer during that one super awesome sale I got Eden of the East (so worth it), Yu Yu Hakusho seasons 1 and 2 (SO F***ING WORTH IT), and Claymore (can't get past first couple episodes gah). After playing the completely terrible Chaos Wars, I was reminded of Gungrave's existence and my interest was piqued. So, B8. Worth it?

I dunno about Gungrave but you should finish Claymore, because it is awesome. Aside from its terrible anime ending. Or not, since the manga is still on going and they could always animate the whole series once it is done.
The thing with people recommending you skip the first episode, is that it is an adaption of a budget action game. Most people aren't really aware of it (so the change comes as a surprise to them), or prefer the way the anime expands the backstory/character development anyway. The first episode starts in media res in the portion covered by the game, before the second episode starts back at the beginning of the plot and continues until it catches up to where it started and then continues to the end of the story. Kind of like Berserk.
It's not really meant to be a spoiler, but a lot of people see it as one. If you've played Chaos Wars and read the character bios, you'd probably know at least part of the spoilers and what the games focus on so it's not exactly a big shock (though the anime is based on the first game while Chaos Wars uses the sequel's plot and characters). Though, about 80% of the stuff in the first episode is repeated verbatim in the second half which is the other reason people tell them to skip it.

The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons. Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07)
I'm probably already spoiled some (I remember the main character having some sort of badass attack for the special that a normal human definitely couldn't do, and I think glowing eyes due to some sort of energy, and his/her father is evil and the head of a corporation?...possibly, because my memory sucks), but I guess I'll skip it when I get it because I generally hate displaced episodes. Higurashi is the only example I can think of where it worked well and that's just because LOL SHOCK VALUE.

That spoiler you posted definitely isn't from Gungrave.
Anyway, ep 1 is 95% identical to ep 18 (which is where it fits in the timeline). So there is no reason to watch it. Or if you do feel like watching it, do so after completing ep 18.
If you've seen Berserk its exactly like that, the first episode is from later on when the main character is a total badass then the second episode flashbacks to when the character is a total nooblet.
I think you watch episode 1 after episode 17

The batman villians all seem to be one big joke that batman refuses to laugh at - SantaRPG
You seem to be thinking of Mika, who isn't the main character in the anime or either game. Though like I said, in chaos wars all the Gungrave stuff is based off of Gungrave Overdose.

Up to episode 7 or so, where Harry and Brandon join the Family. Skipped the first one. >_> predictions:
Harry becomes a major antagonist. In fact, if this doesn't happen, I'll be pretty surprised. Black loli gets kidnapped. Possibly by Harry. Bear is going to die a heroic manly death to pave way for Harry (or Brandon, if Harry's evil) to become successor to Big Daddy. That-other-guy-that's-voiced-by-Daisuke-Ishiwara is going to spout off s*** like 'SO THIS IS WHAT A FAMILY IS' when he inevitably dies.

I disagree on skipping the first episode. I mean, when did you plan to watch it? Never watching it would be odd.
Granted, I played the game first, but yeah, unless you have never heard of the game or seen the box, it's not really a spoilery problem. Plus spoilers, pssh, I can handle spoilers.
Definitely a cool show.

Also, if you like dubs, I'd strongly recommend you watch that. It's basically Kirk Thornton being Kirk Thornton and to me, everything sounded a lot more natural. But thats only if you prefer dubs. Sub should still be fine, but it does have a good dub is all I'm saying =). It makes the two people who Brandon works for in the first few episodes become a tad more likeable as well.

if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it do the other trees laugh?

I've specifically avoided the game because I've heard both the game and anime were good, and I like going into things blind! I actually didn't see this coming for sure early on, though there was plenty of foreshadowing that made me suspicious.
I guess I'll watch it when I get off work because I'm pretty sure I know what it entails now. >_>

First three episodes I kept switching back and forth, but I just like the subs more. Plus oh god who was that playing the black kid in the first few episodes because that caused me to laugh my ass off

From: pjbasis | #022 Knowing the general outline and watching it unfold are completely different anyways.
I can never get how people lose interest just because of spoilers. Not that you're doing that, I'm just saying. Although I'm like you and don't mind getting spoiled on some things, you have to understand people prefer no spoilers at the beginning since the moment the spoiler happens can be as important as the spoiler itself
