Y'all World fans are crazy! It's pretty much a carbon copy of SMB3, IMO... but SMB3 won handily in terms of difficulty, power-ups, and especially level design. World had the better soundtrack and... Yoshi, but that was it. It just felt kind of complacent and rushed, I think.

SMB3 and SM64 are good picks for sure, but I don't know. I just don't think they come all that close to SMB1. That's just platforming bliss in my book.

I can't deny that Star Road was really neat, and I do like its visual style too! But it didn't push the hardware like SMB3 did. I mean, I play SMB3, and I'm just like... "how the hell did they pull this off on an NES?" It also has that really neat "stage show/play" motif.

As for the level designs, they weren't too memorable or exciting to me. Tubular was awesome, but that's the only level I distinctly remember - everything else just blended together. Whereas SMB3 has those airships, and the giant world, and even some good underwater levels!

What? I don't even think of SMB1 as a good game. It's almost unplayable. No vertical scrolling, no backward scrolling, really boring repetitive levels, thoughtlessly designed levels, way too difficult levels, control is effed, almost no powerups, no map, no nothing. Yuck. SMB1 is like a proof of concept, waiting for someone to make a real game out of sidescroller platforming.

Whoa whoa, WHAT? Repetitive and thoughtlessly designed levels? Man, they keep me on my toes every time I play 'em. I think the challenge level is perfect too - especially compared to games like Sunshine, that have wildly unbalanced difficulty (some of those Sprites required the patience of Mother Teresa to get).

Not sure why some people dislike the controls so much, either. Compared to many other games of the era, I think they're pretty dang fluid - just compare its controls to Ice Climber's.

Just look at some of these levels in SMB1. Here's 5-1:

external image

There's nothing interesting about it! There are some goombas, some koopas, some pipe flower guys, and a whole lot of flatness. I'll admit, some of these look fun. Here's 7-1:

external image

That looks pretty interesting. But compared to levels from later games it's basically just a bunch of single bullet bills over and over, and *two* hammer bros. fights. So repetitive!

I used to think YI was on par with SMB1.

Replaying it recently has knocked it down a few pegs.
I've really appreciated the fantastic design, graphically, levels, mechanics, everything.

But at it's core it's really less about platforming and more about...puzzles and collecting stuff.

Yoshi's Island is good. Not SMB3/SMW levels of good, though. World is also really solid. It just felt very fluid to me, I loved the secrets and Star Road, and it was just well-done all around.

SMB1...I didn't play SMB1 much, but I did play lots of SMBDX! That game was kind of fun, but really hard and difficult. It was a nice game, but that's all. Definitely a lower-tier Mario game, imho, but better than some Mario games. Like NSMB.
