Also I haven't seen the new Tomb Raider trailer but Lara Croft is not one of the video game girls I listed because she does seem pretty sexualized. But I've never played a Tomb Raider game so I could easily be wrong.

I'm not wrong with the list of girls I did mention though!

Any article that cites Men's Rights blogs, uses the word "slut" completely unironically, or uses "alpha" and "beta" probably has an ulterior motive, and that motive is "Women are inferior".

Yeah, that includes that horrible scrall that ExTha posted.

I didn't get that vibe from the article at all. I don't agree with everything I have read but it just seems like social commentary to me. The author discussed some fair points about laws, made a couple of silly points to me, but the general tone even in the things I disagreed with came off as intelligent and reasoned.

You haven't lived up to the same standard, I am afraid. I think you are the one who wants Lara Croft in that trailer to be the victim of something, because from a story telling point of view it was a very powerful scene.

Of course it's a very powerful scene, you're watching someone attempting rape. I'm sure the rape scenes in I Spit on Your Grave were very powerful too, but it doesn't change the fact that it's exploiting a serious situation for a little character development in a work that probably isn't gonna treat it with the gravity it needs to be treated with.

That article brings up some fair points about laws, true, but it's mostly concerned with things like "The Game" (a horrible pickup method that basically treats women as objects to be conquered with penises), and quoting a few select blogs over and over, with vaguely related points and trying to piece it together to form a whole. The facts are cursory, you can make anything say anything with enough facts and vague connections, the intent behind it is what you need to look at.

And while I'm moved by your small concession, your inability to discredit any of what he's saying while trying to frame it as wrong by pointing to intent is very transparent. The intent is to make a prediction based on factual evidence. Is there a bit of anger in there? Oh for sure, but I think it's fairly well justified.

Well the citations I noticed were less about backing up the opinions and more backing up the facts. An example of this is when he mentioned a man's child not being his own he linked to a story on a blog. True that blog was over the top but it had the details about that specific story. Also this article never mentioned the word slut, it was a responder.

When he mentioned "The Game" (which we all just lost) it was mostly discussing old fashioned gender roles and how changing them could be dangerous. Something I disagree with but not exactly startling things. I consider your view on the Tomb Raider trailer more weird than traditions and social strategy, really. It doesn't mean I have to agree with what the article is saying but he attempts to back himself up so despite my misgivings I consider it before rejecting it, and really those aspects have little to do with the main thrust of the article. If anything you could accuse him of wandering off point.

Exploitation of serious situations for entertainment has been going on for as long as plays have been written about murder and betrayal. I am going to go with close to 2800 years on that I could be wrong. We see murder a lot in video games but I sincerely doubt you would be arguing fiercely against murder in video games that don't treat the loss of life with the sanctity it deserves. Mostly because in the same trailer someone is shot right in the face and you didn't mention it, which is very convenient for my point if I can be honest. This isn't exploitation, especially with how the developers of the game are speaking. This isn't "a little" character development either. Even the title of the trailer states this is a cross roads for Lara. It is a serious subject; it appears that it is being treated as a life altering moment. From that moment it has been said that Lara was rise above it to become the woman she needs to be. There is nothing hateful or cruel about this beyond what every story teller must do sometimes to their characters. Hardship is a part of any great development, and to just casually assume they will not be able to handle it is a bit silly. Give them the chance. Or don't, I guess, but then who is judging who then?
