I am sure I've seen chatter about this before, but I figure a lot of board 8ers like to learn about new things and nothing beats free. I am talking about schools like Stanford, Princeton, and Penn. This would be a really amazing chance to spend your summer learning about stuff that you couldn't otherwise either afford or have time to do. There is a big focus on math and computer science, but they offer a lot of other courses as well.
Personally I am looking at A History of the world since 1300 and the Game Theory courses as something I would be interested in, although a lot of them jump off the page at me. In fact if you play mafia I would highly suggest taking the Game Theory course if you have time, maybe you could be almost as good as me.
Are you able to get into them if the start date has already passed? I'd be interested in the Cryptography course, but it looks like it started yesterday.

A lot of these look pretty interesting, what with me being a CS guy and all.
Game theory too. A lot of these sessions that I'm actually interested in taking are either TBA or overlap with the early parts of the fall semester though :(
Damn this place is awesome why would I not sign up for all these. Much thanks. I can't wait until the next time I play chess, at which point I will flip the board. When my opponent complains, I will lift a single eyebrow and icily ask them if they have a certificate in Game Theory from Stanford.
But actually registering and enrolling in several courses literally took me less than 5 minutes.
You guys should definitely take Udacity's Programming Languages class with Westley Weimer. I took his REAL class at my school last semester and he is definitely one of the best profs.
I might be interested, but I have a little over 2 and a half weeks to write all of the lectures to a class for which I'm only an expert on 1/3 of. (that 1/3 at least will just be a reduction of another of my classes, so that part should be easy). gotta teach myself a little more about geology and oceanography than I learned in middle school.
Chris' post must have mafia in it because GameFOX blocked it.
Free online courses sounds dangerous.

From: The Mana Sword | #004 Are you able to get into them if the start date has already passed? I'd be interested in the Cryptography course, but it looks like it started yesterday. Yep, tried signing up for the sociology class and it works. I think it goes through a weekly schedule.
I'm also interested in the History class but eh it might be interfering with my classes. Unless I can take the lectures at a different time in the week?

VI is not afraid of 7. Because if 7 8 9, VI ate 7.
I'm really amazed at the rising popularity of this sort of thing. Thanks for the links. I've always been interested in free education but have never taken the plunge until now. Screw it, I want to learn. Seeing these sorts of things enough times has finally made me want to do it. I'm excited!
Any B8'ers interested in a study group if enough of us take the same class?
I've just signed up for "A History of the world since 1300" and "Applied Cryptography".

I was thinking about taking one of the Crytography classes (the Udacity one is also taught by someone from my school), but I'm already taking that IRL next semester, I dunno.
This is absolutely wonderful. I just finished a class on World History from 1500, so I think I'll skip on the History course. I'm taking Game Theory and the Fantasy/Science Fiction class, though. Thinking of taking the Health Policy and Affordable Care Act, Intro to Logic, World Music, and maybe Cryptography, but I don't want to overwork myself.

Rank 9, Dr. Peace? Pffft, nothing compared to Rank 1, Dr_Football! when thinking of Krystal, does GMUN's pants get overcrowded? ~ GMUN
It's a shame that the one class I'm interested in - World Music - starts so late. By the time it starts, most of my free time will be spent marking papers. I still signed up, though. Hopefully I can commit.

I will say though, for some advice, post your courses. The first I had was tough because I just couldn't care enough. It is best to post your classes so we could form a board 8 group.

All I took because everything else is either stuff I couldn't motivate myself to work for or stuff I just know I would hate (anything involving maths goes there).
From: gotspork | #030 so how does this work? what is the penalty for failing? You'll never be offered tenure and half of your OSTs will mysteriously vanish.

Hm, what is everyone else taking? I'm interested in cryptography, algothrithms and the intro to statistics (mostly for learning R)
