Rules: - Rate from 0.1 to 10 (one decimal places is fine, more than that and I'll round for you). I'd prefer if 5 were an average rather than 7. - Unless a specific version is stated, rate the best version that you have played on games released on multiple platforms - You may vote for any games you want that have been rated before at any time. You may also change your vote at any time. - No alts, no joke voting, no purposeful downvoting - you all know this. - Please only vote if you've played enough of the game to be able to rate it. - You may nominate as many games as you want on any given day. Horrible controls, horrible hit detection, and that's just the gameplay (since we also get some bad SNES-era writing which thinks it isn't terrible so actually eats up some time). Don't see what this game did well. Its sequel improves on it in every way and just manages to be mediocre.
Yeah, I know this game has some fans, but I really can't stand it. I find many SNES RPGs to be overrated but this one takes the cake.

Pretty ballsy opinion given how beloved SoM tends to be around here. It's also one I happen to agree with. Too many major and minor flaws to list, and it's one of the few 2D games I can think of with legitimate camera problems. Although in my mind, the strong positives- looks great, sounds legendary- put its final score a little higher.
3/10
(And for the record, I try and use the full 1-10 scale.)

This was the third in the series that I have played. I really enjoyed Sword of Mana and thought Children of Mana was decent. People said this was by far the best in the series and saying that it was a letdown would be an understatement. I think the worst thing about it was its exceptionally poor area layouts
^Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on SD3? Neo seems to think it's merely average, but I feel it's a huge improvement over SoM and one of the better SNES RPGs.

I decided to go through a few of the SNES RPG's I'd missed when I was a kid a few years ago. Super Mario RPG was fun, Chrono Trigger was awesome, and Earthbound was one of the best games I'd ever played.
Secret of Mana....... sucked. I really didn't enjoy it at all. The combat was boring and wonky, the characters were awful, and the music destroyed my ear canal. And yeah, I played some of it co-op with Dante.
I'll give it a 2.8

SoM has bad music? Please. It even inspired one of the defining rap tunes of our generation:

Outstanding Action-RPG. Definitely one of the best of its time. Seiken Densetsu 3 is just as good but I'd still give SoM the edge. The best of the Mana series, too bad the series is fiddling with mediocrity as of late. Dawn of Mana especially was one of the most horrible experiences ever.
