First off, these earbuds, usually around $70, and well worth that price, are on sale for $28. I posted here a couple months ago about the lower model, the Brainwavz Beta, that were on sale for $13. These are worth the full price and definitely the sale price so just a heads up from your resident audiophile that you won't get better earbuds for the price.

Secondly, what the hell? Seriously. What. The. Hell.

EDIT: Also hi B8. You guys rock. I miss you.

Oh man. I'm super pleased with the earbuds from that last sale you linked. Not sure if I should be spending another $28 right away though, especially when I'm not much of an audiophile.

Do keep in mind that the other ones I linked, the Betas, have an MSRP of like $30. The MSRP for these is $89 and they're only $15 more than the Betas with this sale.

Also hi Shake.

I've posted two topics about earbuds ... and I wanted to share the image more than anything. But everybody I work with asks me for recs and so do all my friends. Was just spreading the love as an audiophile.

I could see it now. Headphone mods: re-cable them, install new velour pads, burn them in and also put on the horse head for excellent immersion.

M4s are definitely better, but it is a slightly different sound. The Betas are a bit more analytic, but the M4s still produce much wider sound altogether.

The M50s are definitely one of the bigger gateway drugs for audiophiles. I'd say a sizable portion of people who get hooked on high-end audio started with the M50s, Grado or some of the entry-level Sennheisers. Excellent headphones, I only got rid of my pair to trade to the Audio Technica AD700 to use for gaming.

So Digi, I got those ones you recommended last time and I'm kinda confused on how to wear them. Should I be jamming the piece into my ear so it stays it or should the larger part be hanging out. They don't fit like typical ipod earbuds but maybe my ears are smaller than average... I don't know. I can force them in and they fit but it's kinda uncomfortable.

The Betas should sit right in your ear canal. They are actually some of the better fitting earbuds I've ever used. Have you tried the smallest tips? You could look into buying some of the smaller comply foam tips. Though I think those might have came with one of them. I don't have my Betas right in front of me but they're not around-the-ear. You just push them downward into your ear and they should fit pretty snug with at least one of the tips.

EDIT: To be clear, the tips should just sit right in. The whole thing doesn't need to be in there.

More things that could break, and plus I think they look dumb. Just my personal preference since I never use them. I only like them when they're stylish - like the Miles Davis Trumpets earbuds where the microphone controls look like trumpet valves.

Kind of unrelated, but what in your opinion are the best monitoring headphones under $300? Accuracy is everything, style is nothing. I've already got earbuds for outside and my Shure DJ's for performing/mixing, but they're doubling as my monitors right now and I like to keep 'em separated. I guess comfort is also a huge factor since I plan to be wearing them for about 6-8 hours a day.

Accuracy in this case I believe means neutral. So you're looking for the most neutral headphone for under $300 ... avoiding V-shaped signatures primarily... it's still a bit more difficult than that. One thing to really note is that a lot of headphones you'll see listed as "monitor" headphones actually aren't at all. The aforementioned ATH-M50 are called "studio monitor" headphones but they couldn't be farther from them. Their signature is entirely V-shaped with far, far emphasized lows (albeit very clearly emphasized and not muddled)

But anyway, back to the task at hand. Are we talking unamped, or amped? I always carry around a portable amp with me, so I can use some headphones with some high impedence. I'd think that the Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro are the best neutral, accurate headphones for under $300, but they come in just under that price point ($270) and have a high impedance at 250 ohms so they're not terribly efficient if you're driving them from, say, an iPod.

Another option near that $300 mark would be the AKG 550. I haven't actually listened to them extensively but I've heard nothing but good things from them. One you might consider looking into are the FA-003 or the re-brand, the Brainwavz HM5. It might seem like I'm hot on that brand right now but as noted, they are a re-brand so it's not just loyalty or anything like that. The first thing I ever read about them was "The new neutral champ", and they'll run you about $150. I urge you to read up on them and see if the sound is what you're looking for. I'm ordering my own in about two weeks.

Some cheaper options would be the Sennheiser HD280 and the AKG K240 Studio, which are very neutral-sounding headphones. The Beyerdynamic DT100 also fit the description of what you're looking for. There's also the Sony MDR-V6, which is something of the "canned response" for this type of question. I personally love them, but the sound does emphasize the bass just a hair, making them less-than totally neutral. One more to name: German Maestro GMP 8.35 D. Look into them.

Obviously I didn't answer your question out-right, but perhaps you can do some more searching based on those?

As Koala noted, they come with the normal three sets of rubber tips, and then the one pair of the comply foam tips (which are my favorites), I believe in the small size.

That's pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear. While I don't own a portable amp, the laptop I'm looking yo buy right now has an on-board amplifier that should be able to give it that extra kick. I'll need to take a pretty close look at everything you mentioned, although I have to admit that I'm quite partial to those that use a coiled cord that only connects on one side... so that MDR-V6 is looking pretty damn incredible for the price.

I'd just assumed you have used the MDR-V6 before! I will say that you probably can't best them at that price. They're excellent for it. As I said, I think the first Beyerdynamic I listed are absolutely the best in this regard but at $270, they're ridiculously inefficient to drive so not really a smart option unless you know they'll be driven adequately. I'd venture a guess that you will be very pleased with the MDR-V6 - a very popular headphone, that one.
