hey, hip-hop. one of your brightest moments doesn't live up to the brilliance that is the album with "Kids." "Rosa Parks?" please. MGMT have Joanna Newsom in their video.

500. Outkast - Aquemini 499. B.B. King - Live in Cook County Jail 498. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 497. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells 496. Boz Scaggs - Boz Scaggs 495. Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up 494. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular 493. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 492. Eurythmics - Touch 491. Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign
This being the first 10, I'm not going to be too critical (also, I've never heard the Boz Scaggs or Albert King albums), but I'm pretty sure White Blood Cells and Aquemeni are both going to be better than most of the albums over the next 100 or so, with the exception of the ones that are even more poorly placed than they are. Oracular Spectacular has one great song, which is apparently enough to get you on a RS list these days. I will say this they did get The Stone Roses right. They deserve to be on the list, but not all that high up.
490. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres 489. KISS - Destroyer 488. Husker Du - New Day Rising 487. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual 486. Earth, Wind and Fire - That's The Way of the World 485. Pearl Jam - Vitalogy 484. Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes 483. Gang of Four - Entertainment! 482. Steve Earle - Guitar Town 481. D'Angelo - Voodoo
ZZ Top and KISS seem more like artifacts of the late 70s and early-mid 80s than they do actual bands, but I guess if you're making this as a sort of time capsule then you would feel obligated to include them?
Deathly afraid that the presence of the not-really-that-good Vitalogy means that this list is going to be inundated with Pearl Jam, who for my money are the most overrated band going. The fact that That's The Way of the World is behind Vitalogy and adjacent to Cyndi Lauper is kinda crazy.
Kudos due for Voodoo, though.

oh hey look another RS damage control article because their editors are completely myopic and then pretend like they are relevant after people b**** at them for years! (Kid A getting a 3/5 and then becoming Album of the Decade, anyone?)

Those 2 and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are 3 of the top 50 or so albums ever.

480. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 479. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain 478. Loretta Lynn - All Time Greatest Hits 477. Merle Haggard - Down Every Road 476. The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death 475. Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Armed Forces 474. Manu Chao - Próxima Estación: Esperanza 473. The Smiths - The Smiths 472. George Michael - Faith 471. Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Okay.
What the f*** is this.
478. Loretta Lynn - All Time Greatest Hits
Seriously. Next they're gonna tell me that that Eagles greatest hits album is in the top 100 or something, right? A compilation of Loretta Lynn songs is ahead of Cuban Linx and Maggot Brain.
But wait! It gets better! The worst of B.I.G.'s albums, the bloated and mostly skippable Life After Death is ahead of Cuban Linx! And inexplicably, it moved up from 483 on the last version!

1. it's weird to call album that so heavily features Ghostface a "solo" album 2. this may be true, but that implies that there are 479 albums better than OBCL, and only one of them is from the Wu

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head 465. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs 464. Def Leppard - Hysteria 463. Echo and the Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here 462. R.E.M. - Document 461. Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
Really? Tunnel of Love and Document ahead of The Score? This is a list we're talking about in 2012, and we're talking about Tunnel of Love and Document being ranked higher than The Score.

-I love how ~80% of the hip-hop albums on this list came out 20+ years ago -LMFAO at their Radiohead album ranking -Jesus Christ is it really necessary to include 10+ Beatles albums, 8 or so Rolling Stones and Dylan albums??

460. Hole - Live Through This 459. The Drifters - Golden Hits 458. Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection 457. My Morning Jacket - Z 456. Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear 455. Los Lobos - How Will the Wolf Survive? 454. Alice Cooper - Love It to Death 453. EPMD - Strictly Business 452. Jon Prine - John Prine 451. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Greatest hits albums have no place on a list of greatest albums. Get that through your skull, RS.
Also, I love me some Elton John, but Tumbleweed Connection? No one cares about anything on that except "Burn Down the Mission"

"Occulams razor says you are scum" - masterplum
Only 2 albums from the 90s or later in the top 100! Can you guess which they are? Here's a hint-- RS gave them both a 3 on initial release!
XFD are they really that stupid?
Literally trying to say that there have been two top 100 albums released in my lifetime
Literally saying that there are ~15 albums from the 1960s ALONE that are better than the best album of the 1990s and ~50 albums from the 1960s ALONE that are better than the best album of the 2000s

450. Jackson Browne - For Everything 449. Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers 448. The Police - Synchronicity 447. Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto 446. MC5 - Back in the USA 445. Steve Miller Band - Fly Like an Eagle 444. War - The World is a Ghetto 443. Cheap Trick - In Color 442. Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! 441. Suicide - Suicide
Synchronicity is a bit too low, but is also the second best Police album. Does that mean Outlandos D'Amour is going to be in like, the 300s? It better not be.
I'm not sure Cheap Trick's In Color would have made my top 500 albums, despite the fact that I only have about 1200, and really like Cheap Trick.
I hope you all like Devo, because this is presumably the last time we'll see them on this list. Maybe in another 10 years, RS will have caught up to how good Devo is.
Wonder if any of the other Big Star albums will show up? Radio City should, but this is Rolling Stone...
Didn't see any Porcupine Tree from skimming through. (Shame) Saw Nine Inch Nails, but it was The Downward Spiral. (Wrong choice in my opinion) Saw lots of Radiohead, in a generally good order. (Amnesiac is over rated though I think).
I finished it. I just never shared it. There's a difference.

Also I never understood the mindset of 'LOL NOT MUCH RECENT ALBUMS ON HERE LMAO'
of course a great album released a few years back won't feature high up on this, it still has to stand the test of time
I understand if you don't agree with that choice, but I don't see why you wouldn't expect a mag like Rolling Stone to use that standard. If there's one music magazine that's incredibly old school it's that one
440. The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash 439. Sam Cooke - Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963 438. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry 437. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III 436. Beck - Sea Change 435. Nirvana - In Utero 434. Big Star - #1 Record 433. George Harrison - All Things Must Pass 432. Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets 431. PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
I feel like I should just let Icon take this one, given the Sam Cooke, Big Star, George Harrison, and PJ Harvey slights.
(Boys Don't Cry means that have seven albums on the list right? By my count, Three Imaginary Boys, Pornography, Kiss Me, The Head on the Door, Faith, and Disintegration are all leagues better than Boys Don't Cry, which, by the way, is a compilation that came out after Three Imaginary Boys and Faith)

edit woops sorry cokes here's spoilers #20 Thriller: I guess it's deserving but I've never really loved MJ that much #19 Astral Weeks: I did not expect this to be this high, so congrats RS on making a good decision. One of my favorite records, top 5 stuff #18 Born To Run: Good album, great even, wouldn't really be in my top 20 #17 Nevermind: Of course a bit cliché, I didn't expect anything else, but a great choice nonetheless #16 Blood On The Tracks: Not my favorite Dylan record, but it's up there #15 Are You Experienced?: Might be my least favorite Experience record, but that doesn't mean much when all three of them are superb #14 Abbey Road: My third favorite Beatles record, top 50 for sure #13 VU & Nico: My favorite record by them, classic, good choice, etc #12 Kind of Blue: After delving a bit deeper in jazz, I'm a novice still mind you, this still remains my favorite record in the whole genre. Deserving of all its praise #11 The Sun Sessions: Never been an Elvis fan so I can't comment on this #10 The White Album: Great record, lots of superb songs, wouldn't make my top 20 but probably top 100 #9 Blonde on Blonde: Again not my favorite Dylan record, but it's good #8 London Calling: Not a huge Clash fan but this is a great record #7 Exile on Main Street: Haven't listened to it in full so I can't comment. I haven't really looked into the Stones much yet #6 What's Going On: Haven't listened to it in full #5 Rubber Soul: My second favorite Beatles record so top 20 for sure #4 Highway 61 Revisited: Second favorite Dylan record, top 50 for sure #3 Revolver: The exact placement I would give this record so good going RS #2 Pet Sounds: Good record, haven't really listened to it much so I can't comment too much #1 Sgt. Pepper's: I know every music mag has a boner for the Beatles and I do too, but I've never been TOO big on Sgt. Pepper's. It's a good record, great even, it has some of their best songs, but ultimately there's 5 records by them or so that I think are better. To each their own
So overall, very much expected the top 20 to be like this, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see Astral Weeks so high up on it
live at the harlem square club is not just the greatest live album ever, it's on a very short list of greatest albums ever. every song is a definitive performance, and many of them are on par with "A Change is Gonna Come." perfect record.
#1 Record is Big Star's best. but this is coming from someone who has The Velvet Underground as VU's best, so. (they're pretty much the same record, at least in tone)
All Things Must Pass is better than most Beatles record, and every Beatles solo record. Paul has some good ones, though.
Stories is probably the third or fourth best PJ Harvey album, but it's likely the highest on the list. oh well.

Various Artists - The Best of Girl Groups Volumes 1 and 2
First of all, really? A VA compilation, and another greatest hits? The Supremes didn't have one album you could put there instead?
New leader for the "What the F***" Album Award - Peter Wolf's Sleepless. Peter Wolf, for those of you who aren't from Boston, was the lead singer for the J. Geils Band (whose great blues rock work from the 70s is almost surely not represented on this list). I did not even know he had a solo career, much less one worth writing about.
Lastly, let's all have a good laugh
