Persona 5 is already in development on an HD current-gen console. We should see something for it eventually, maybe this year's Tokyo Game Show. Persona 4 Arena maybe counts too.

well I was under the assumption that SJ was SMT4 so I was always saying we need an SMT5 before a Persona 5 because it's just wrong for a side series to get more entries than a main series

Last time there was a status report on P5 they already had the engine for it developed and stuff. It'll definitely be out within a year or two. Persona 6 will probably be next gen though. It makes sense for Persona to have more games at this point anyways since it's more popular and successful than the main SMT series now.

Of what I've played of the series: Persona >>>>> Devil Survivor >> DDS > Nocturne/SJ. I need to play the Devil Summoner games still. Nothing's topping Persona for me out of the SMT stuff though.

I've tried Persona 1, but didn't get too far before the UMD messed up. I own P2P, but haven't played it yet. P3 and P4 are my all time favorite games though so even if P1 and P2 sucked it'd still be the best series for me.

Persona 1 is just completely terrible. The story is a jumbled mess, the gameplay is terrible due to the range system (and some characters get absolutely screwed due to this, most notably Mark), there's no way to view the full map in dungeons leaving you constantly wandering around until something works, and the PSP opening literally spoils the entire game, even taking scenes from the ending scene. Seriously, there's no excuse for that.

Persona 2 fixes the gameplay problems, the fusion system and recruitment is much better, and has a good story to accompany the improvements in gameplay. Still no way to view the whole map in dungeons, but the dungeons themselves are made so it's harder to get lost.
