My first game of any Civ!

Took about 3 hours I guess, I have no idea. Ghandi took the world by force.

But now I have conquered the world, and it....just keeps going.

What else do I do?

Well once you win you're free to stop playing. No real reason not to after you win.

If I were you I'd just bump up the difficulty one level, maybe choose a different map type, pick a different Civ and have at it again (with a different goal for winning the game, if you'd prefer). But that's just me.

Took about 3 hours I guess

What the flying hell?

I don't think I've ever finished a game of Civ in under 100 hours

Did you play the smallest map with 1 rival or something?

Suffice to say what you played wasn't the Civ experience

Well I was on easy.

But it was 3 other nations, one continent.

What.

While 3 hours is weird for anything that isn't a culture rush I've never come anything close to this number. Most I've ever taken is like 20 hours on a domination victory on a huge earth map with 17 rivals (Civ IV's Earth scenario). If you play with less opponents/not a huge map/don't go for domination it's quicker.

You can win a game of Civ in a few hours so long as you're not on Marathon.

Pretty much all of my games take a good 10 hours or so, and that's on Normal.

My friend always wants to play on the second-longest setting, to which I say "what the hell is wrong with you".

I pretty much just spammed researched/produced whatever my advisors told me to get without looking at it.

I suppose on higher difficulties that's not very effective!

Also I saved the Germans for last, but when I got there they were all still in the middle ages, while I had fighter helicopters, so it was a sadly pathetic climax. Steamrolled their whole nation in 3 turns.

I'm sure me having 7 cities before I even invaded a nation for the first time factored in. By the end I had maybe 20.

I guess most people here play easy difficulties and automate their units then?

Among Civ enthusiasts games usually go into the triple digits. Usually you'll have at least 10 other civs on multiple continents, and control every unit and city manually. Frankly, I don't see the point in playing if you're just going to let the computer do the work for you.

Also, playing on Epic is a given. Quick and Normal are unbalanced and stupid, with units becoming obsolete before they even reach the front lines.

Civ 5 is a lot faster than the others though judging by the few games I played before rightfully declaring it an utter pile of crap and going back to 3 and 4.

This all seems rather silly.

I'll just stick to what I'm doing.

And from the sound of things it seems that Civ V was indeed the correct choice for normal people.

Nope. You can play on King or Immortal in Civ V and still win a normal game in 5-7 hours.

Don't pay attention to him. Civ IV is great, and doesn't require any of what he's saying. No Civ game does. The best thing about the series is that its full of options for the player.

Wow starting with max tech is boring.

An all island game also seems infuriating at the moment but I don't actually have time to play so who knows.

I could only ever handle Civ on the easiest setting where I absolutely dominated. I like to play 4X games but I don't like being challenged. If I'm not getting every single wonder and wrecking everyone I come across, I just get bored.

This topic

You people will never know the feeling of perfectly executing a massive amphibious assault on a mighty opponent involving several hundred units on both sides where every single move must be carefully evaluated, and taking his capital with the last few battered tanks to stop his Space Race victory on the last turn.

Civ is about creating an entire new world history to immerse yourself in. Playing Civ as if it was Age of Empires or Advance Wars is inconceivable.

Where they still don't "usually" spend 100+ hours on a single game of Civilization.

I micromanage the Hell out of Civ and have never even approached 100. Maybe you're just slow at clicking things.

I'm with you!

I started my first (and only) game of Civ III over 10 years ago and there is no end in sight.

If you don't take as long for your civilization to evolve as it takes an actual civilization, you're playing wrong.

I plan to transfer my save on to my children/grandchildren right before I die. I hope they do the same.

my huge map deity games take like 25 hours - i don't play on epic though, and sometimes i get to a point where victory is assured and stop playing because it's boring to clean up. for v in particular i also slack off on some of the micromanagement because the ai is just so bad that i don't need to micro everything to win
