I know!
I used to rank it above too but now I can see where some fans might think it neutered the original with it's heavy guiding hand. -- http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/Rakaputra/pjbasis.png SuperNiceDog - 1, pjbasis - 0 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Metroid II is great for what it is; it's just not great if you're looking for nonlinearity

First time I finished Return of Samus and Fusion as well.
Super > Metroid > Fusion > Zero Mission > Return of Samus - Metroid fell from it's top spot due to a more intimate session with it's technical flaws and questionable design choices. Nonlinearity and exploration is still unparalleled. If the game could just have a few things fixed it would be the best. - Super is still as awesome as ever. - Fusion is the real star here. I used to bash it as extremely linear and boring, sharing the bottom of the barrel with Corruption and Other M. Turns out it had a good amount of exploration in between segments, and the game really opens up at the end. Probably most of all, I really appreciated the bosses. Best of the 2D hands down. - Zero Mission fell pretty hard when I realized it was actually almost as linear as Fusion in the end, but without as many navigation rooms. Also felt pretty small in comparison to Fusion and, obviously, had less "freshness" to it. - Metroid II, pretty linear in the end, and I really hate how close-up Samus is on the screen. Made exploring and fighting annoying. Still pretty cool all the same. Probably gonna do 3D Metroid next. -- http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/Rakaputra/pjbasis.png SuperNiceDog - 1, pjbasis - 0 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Thinking that any game, even if it's after a few fixes, could be better than Super Metroid?

ZM is so small though!
It worked for the original, but when you have a map and a blinking dot telling you where to go it feels really small! -- http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/Rakaputra/pjbasis.png SuperNiceDog - 1, pjbasis - 0 ... Copied to Clipboard!

I don't like the objective navigation thing in ZM, but other than that it runs all over metroid 1

You can't really ignore them that much.
The game is set up so that you need the next item before you can do much else. -- http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/Rakaputra/pjbasis.png SuperNiceDog - 1, pjbasis - 0 ... Copied to Clipboard!

I'd rank Metroid above ZM too. ZM is certainly the more accessible and stress-free game to play, no doubt about that, but it feels a bit sterile in my opinion, it suffers from a lot of the linearity issues that Fusion had (albeit with more subtlety and less Adam yapping at you) and I don't feel like it has a lot of personality on its own. Metroid is a flawed but fascinating classic that deserves more credit than it gets. Hell, if you take out the starting with 30 health thing which is absolutely awful, I don't even think it's a bad game, I think it's fun when you're not farming health.

Metroid 1 with some un-busted mechanics could be interesting.
fortunately, that's what ZM is and then some. which is why it's way better than Metroid 1. shame about the difficulty though. -- xyzzy ... Copied to Clipboard!

Zero Mission is great because at first it seems like it's straight forward and linear. When you find out just how breakable the game is it becomes a goldmine of speed running and % completion runs. So much better than Fusion which is virtually non breakable. Obviously, it could do with a little less hand holding on the initial run but it's really a sandbox of a game once you realize that it was designed to be broken.
