Counselman Tarrlok just got a whole lot more awesome.
SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN WHEN EXTREMES MEET
Let's review:
- He's got some moves, as in he's not just your average Waterbender- he has a unique fighting style which includes firing off icicles at an extremely rapid pace in addition to water shield - He's a lefty and an Equalist (I believe I saw him slip an Equalist glaive over his left hand) - He can f***ing BLOODBEND despite originating from the Water Tribe not associated with this skill AND he can do it without a full moon - He looks suspiciously like that Yakkon guy
Should've been modified so it said "TENZIN" instead of "CAVE JOHNSON", but other than that, goodie. Is he going to start ranting about Spiderman next, though?

There's always hope for better things in life. But you can't let anything, friend, lover, God himself, be your hope. You have to be your own hope.

If this show had balls, they'd show the three members of the council being Tarrlok's literal people puppets. Blood bending to mess with their brains or straight up necromancy.

Wow. Bloodbending Tarlokk! Korra had already informed about bloodbending by Katara, since her understanding was based on the full moon. I'm really interested in how the next episode goes. This is such a great set up for a two parter, what with the Avatar being kidnapped alone, while the rest of the gang are in jail.
- He's a lefty and an Equalist (I believe I saw him slip an Equalist glaive over his left hand)
Can I ask where you saw this? He didn't seem to like being compared to Amon by Korra. It'd be so much cooler if he was on his own than with the Equalists (but his actions are obviously playing into Amon's hands, one way or another).
Also, I have to say... Tenzin, you idiot. Korra was never going to sleep soundly while her friends where imprisoned. Should have kept a watch.

Also, when Korra told Tenzin about her visions, and Tenzin instructed her to contact Aang, I figured (and really hoped!) that the 'extremes meeting' would be Aang and Korra (being very different kinds of Avatar and all). That'll have to wait... but perhaps not for long.

One final comment... the Avatar was bested again. In Ep. 3 Bolin was successfully rescued in a surprise attack, but ever since then the Avatar's foes have been one step ahead. Ep. 4 saw her ambushed on memorial island by Amon and a squad of chi blockers, Ep. 6 was the immaculately planned attack on the stadium, Ep. 7 was the orchestrated trap, where she and the crew only escaped capture by virtue of Asami's switch, Ep. 8 sees Tarlokk flip the tables on her with bloodbending after luring her out by getting her friends imprisoned. It's interesting to note that all of those conflicts were won by the side that best planned in advance how it would go.

Well to be fair he might not be an Equalist, but he is certainly not above using their equipment. Look closely at his left hand right after he KO's Korra (her vision goes all blurry) but before he locks her in the truck and you'll see him slipping something over his left hand. It covers his entire forearm and is a darker color than his skin. I'm not sure what else that could be except an Equalist glaive. Also being in league with them would explain why his task force wasn't bothering to chase after the escaped chi-blockers.
Uh, Tarlokk has absolutely nothing on his hands at that time. He seems to be wringing them or perhaps performing some kind of blood bending form, but he is completely bare handed. He definitely does not have an equalist glove or anything.

If this is the case couldn't it be that Tarrlok is merely using the glove to cover his tracks. Like make it look like the Equalists got to the Avatar / make the Equalists look bad? <shrug>

You are talking about when he's walking up to her while her vision is going blurry and he moves his hands up and down? It kind of looks like he's doing the motion of putting a glove on, but I assure you, he has absolutely nothing in his hands
It is kind of dark so maybe if your picture quality is a bit bad it looks like a glove, but he is definitely bare handed.

Yea, I haven't seen anything so far from Aang or Korra's story to doubt them. The only thing that can be cheesy at times is the romance stuff, but it is a kids show.
Honestly I don't think Tarlokk has been very well done at all. His "scheming" has been so obvious and Tenzin's "oooh i don't trust you" hasn't made Tenzin seem like a wise old that sees whats really going on, his lack of effectiveness to do anything about it only makes him look like an idiot. Every council meeting has been Tarlokk being "oh how about this?" with Tenzin going "Noooo that's no good even though I'm not going to give good reasons why!" and then everyone agrees with Tarlokk.
The fight was decent though.

Holy crap that was an amazing episode. I just watched it in s*** quality, but even through the s***ty-ness I could tell it was f***ing awesome. I can't wait until I can actually see it in high quality, especially that final fight.

I would still very much like to know why three council members never have any qualms with Tarrlok. I mean I get it: he's the chairman, and chairman effectively equals leader, but have none of them ever thought to question his extremely judgement? Holy crap are they useless!
On a re-watch (this time with good quality visuals) there were a couple of things I noticed.
- Some of the vistas were gorgeous. Particularly the zoomed out scenes showing the whole city, and those showing the snow falling/lying as Korra travelled to meet Tarlokk. The faded/brown hue that was effective in Ep. 3 was back again during the sequence where Bolin/Mako/Korra. I think the art looks best during those scenes, and it adds a certain
- Some of the music was nice/effective. Particularly the instrumentation when Korra was alone after travelling back from the police commander's unveiling and conveying the desperation right at the end.
- The romantic tension is much better as an undertone that pops up a couple of times each ep (Ikki's "Did you know Korra likes Mako?" and Asami's pointed glare in the mirror stood out here) than when we get Ep. 5's.
- I appreciate the structure now (presuming that Tarlokk doesn't have any connection to Amon here, which may not be true). With Amon manipulating events to make the Equalists appear stronger than they might have been, he's encouraged idiot politicians to over-react and drive more people towards revolution. Instead of "we should all live in harmony" vs. "we need to expunge the city/world of tyrannical benders" it's "we need to control all non-benders" vs. "we need to expunge the city/world of tyrannical benders" with a few marginalised voices trying to find a compromise (and not being able to command much popular support either, I'd expect, as the terrorist threat and the draconian policing polarises opinion). Quite realistic, I think.
- The man in the courtroom sequence (Yakone?) seemed to be attacking the whole courtroom at once despite being handcuffed. Most powerful bender ever? And Tarlokk's "there are a lot of things you don't know about me"... is it meant to imply a connection to those events?
- But hand on a minute - Aang, Sokka and Toph were all present during the trial. Surely Katara must've known what happened and why they were there? It was in a public place, so there's no way she wouldn't have found out, even if Aang didn't tell her. If Aang was injured (or killed?) she'd never forget what happened either. What I'm getting at is - why hasn't Korra asked Katara if she knows about this guy? He doesn't seem easy to forget. Tenzin might also know, but that'd depend on when it happened - Tenzin was 9/10 when Aang defeated Yakone, according to Avatar wiki.
- Or did the attacker do something to prevent people knowing? Next episode is entitled "Out of the Past", so maybe we'll be finding out.

they're pretty obviously being bribed or blackmailed or threatened
the woman did question him one time, though. "Who would lead such a taskforce?"
That's an awesome theory. I hope it's mostly correct. Explains Tarrlok's motivations well, and why we haven't seen Katara in the flashbacks yet. If it's true, the big question will be whether he gets his bending taken away. Would Korra and Team Avatar even step in to save him after what happened in today's ep? Probably not, which means he's likely to end up on his own against Amon...
-- We are living our lives Abound with so much information
I don't think threatening the people you work with everyday would sit well with the council. They could effectively overthrow the chairman if need be. Bribery could be the cause, but what would he bribe them with? Power? They are already the government of the wealthiest city in the new world. That's out. Money? When you have that much power you don't really need it. I don't think it's quite as obvious as you're making it out to be. I'm actually more inclined to believe the writers are just slipping in an effort to give Tenzin and Tarrlok the spotlight.
Edit: And that's not really questioning the idea of the task force so much as agreeing with it immediately on the condition that a decent person would head the organization. They are puppets.
Tenzin (IMO) doesn't seem as persuasive a speaker as Tarrlok, and it's usually easier to argue for tough action than otherwise. The council members could perhaps have been written to be a little more analytical, but I like to think of their behaviour as a satire on most politicians. >.>
