Maybe the benders never lost their powers and just think they do.
That's something I expected since the beginning. He can't be taking their bending permanently like the Avatar. It has to be reversible. Maybe the connection is that he is locking their chakra and their chi can't flow or something. That would be "permanent" but reversible with meditation.
Part of me has always expected their bending was not permanently removed, but now that Lin got her bending removed in such a powerful way I think I would look back on that scene differently when it's confirmed it isn't permanent.
I'm subscribing to that chakra theory until the finale proves otherwise.
I think there's a sort of escalation thing going on with Amon's targets, too. As if he's not just going around robbing people of their bending, but he's doing it systematically.
He first demonstrated his powers on the triads, who one could assume have weak mental constitution and would easily believe that their bending was removed. Next was Tahno and friends, who would probably prove more difficult, but it's completely obvious that Tahno was already aware of what Amon could do and was terrified of losing his bending and livelihood. This continues all the way up to Lin Bei Fong, one of the toughest characters in the series, who, between her men losing their bending and in light of everything else, submitted to the fact that Amon had to be legitimate.
I know it sounds iffy, but it also explains why he didn't remove Korra's bending the first chance he got aside from his martyrdom excuse. He didn't do it because he didn't know if he didn't want to risk trying and failing to remove her bending, or else his illusion of power would fade and people would start to doubt that he can actually take bending away permanently.
Basically, he played it safe to begin with and made a spectacle of himself at the Pro Bending finals because he wanted to make sure everyone knew what he was capable of and ensure that his ultra chi blocking would actually work on everybody.
Convoluted and probably reading too much into things, but it's just a thought.

As far as she knew, it was permanent. The sacrifice doesn't mean any less, though the end result? Sure.

I've suspected it probably wasn't permanent for awhile now, and Lin getting her bending taken away confirms that for me. Whether it's a complex chi-block, a mind trick, or something super Avatar hax is needed to fix, everyone's bending will likely return.
As for who Amon is, I'm thinking it's a manifestation of past Avatars trying to protect the world from having a future tyrant like Fire Lord Ozai. That would explain why Korra has been unable to communicate spiritually with past Avatars except for like a few Aang flashbacks.

Ehhhh that sounds terrible. Aang only talked to Roku for a very long time, and IIRC he only rarely talked to Kiyoshi. The water and previous air Avatars had like 1 sentence each in the finale only.
And the better explanation is that Korra sucks hard at the spiritual stuff. That's why she can't even talk to Aang, just see flashbacks.
Flubbed my words in my earlier post, btw. I meant to say that Amon didn't want to try to take Korra's bending because he wasn't sure if he could actually do it and didn't want to lose face. I know the point still came across, I just screwed up a little.

No matter what the deal with Amon is, I really hope his backstory is explored at least a little bit in the last two episodes. It's been cool having him be this mysterious powerful entity, but I would really like to know more eventually.

I just thought of something. Have they mentioned anything about Tai Lee yet? She was kind of the innovator of chi blocking in Aang's time. She's probably connected to the Equalists somehow.

Amon could easily be a descendant of Ty Lee, but that wouldn't give him any special powers or anything.
But it does seem like the only chi blockers in existence are the Equalists. They have special secret training camps just for Equalists, and you don't see any chi blockers anywhere else. Of course, just like with the metal bending police force, this doesn't mean they're the ONLY ones in existence.

It would definitely make sense he descended from her. Not just the chi-blocking, but he's also agile like her.
It seems to me they wanna keep chi-blocking to a core group. It was a rare ability in Aang's time so it makes sense they wanna keep it that way. Or at least specific to Equalists.

Although Amon being a grandson of Ty Lee makes sense, since her family was non-benders in a predominantly firebender society. He could have easily built up a resentment towards the benders.

She could have retired to a remote town with a farm. I think I remember in the original series she mentioned wanting to go away from the city and back to her family, so she might like the isolation.
Also apparently today is the summer solstice and the finale is aired on the week of the summer solstice. So that's kinda cool.
